*My maternal grandmother had it (and was blind the last 30 years of her life because of it) Five out of eight kids in my mom's generation had it. About half of my maternal cousins currently have it. My sister and I, being two of the three youngest in our generation still don't have it, but it won't be a surprise if either, or both, of us get it. With the exception of a couple of my cousins' kids who already have it everyone who has gotten it in our family did so between the ages of 55-65.

I strongly recommend this website to learn/understand the eating lifestyle. There is nothing wrong with rice and potatoes. It's serving size not food size. The single best recommendation? Cut out or strictly limit the amount of "white food". White flour, refined sugar, salt. Food in a box or a bag is generally filled with this stuff.

They have great recipes and they give you the points that go along with diabetic food management.

Best of luck! An ounce of prevention.......

Last year my fasting glocose was 99 and for as long as I can remember i've been in the 90s. I started weight watchers online Jan 10. (yes, primarily cutting out the whites as noted in above comment).

Last week my fasting glucose was 74. This girl is a happy camper!!!! There is NO diabetes in my family on either side except a 2nd cousin who drank his way there via Beer-alot of beer.

I will dig out these recipes. I strongly recommend that you have a look at the book, How Not to Die, by Dr. Michael Greger. He, and a lot of other plant based advocate doctors have quite a lot to say about diabetes.

Spaghetti Bolognaise with a green salad. I have used some the passata I made from the summer.

I am having dinner at lunch today. I am going to an event at a chef school and have requested a vegan dish. I know they make more or less the same dish every year, a stack of quinoa with various spices and flavours. Atop will be a portabello grilled mushroom and it will all be wrapped in an eggplant wrap.

    So good.

BTW did you know that a portabella mushroom is just a white button mushroom grown up? So we have to pay for the time it takes to grow.
