Yes. "Hispanic" is cultural, not racial.

Ok, I know that is the way the census and many demographic surveys are set up. In those situations we honor the person's self identity.

In this case when the media assigns the race snd cuktural identity, the media's decision seems suspect.

It's not just self identity. There are really black Hispanics. I work with one. From Panama. She's as back as you can imagine, Spanish is first language, immigrated here, and you should see people's surprise when they hear her Spanish accent. 😄

It's not just semantics. I know people from Spanish-speaking countries, born-and-raised there, from families that have been there many generations, who range from blond-blue-eyed-pale-white-skin to very very dark.

As to the media's motives in their wording, well....

Yup, you need to know the backstory before reaching conclusions. What was called in? What did dispatch say? What were the officers expecting to find? How did they get there? Etc....

Our dispatch officers have been trained to *not* initially tell us certain things on the way to the site of the call, so as not to prejudice our assessment and reactions, and to keep us from getting too amped-up while driving to the location.

After this discussion I will give the media some slack, although maybe
I think they dont have to mention cultural affiliation since how would they know besides a Surname? I would think that smeone's color is often tricky, too.

I worked with someone for two decades before I learned she was African American. I just figured she was of Greek or Mediterrainian background.

No need to respond here, I am just musing.

"African-American" is a label that sometimes doesn't make sense if taken literally too. Charlize Theron for example, or my high-school roommate from Zimbabwe.

I guess you are right. Turns out David Duke is a running as a democrat!
