It may be a male thing but I don't feel the need to justify it. Being retired and home alone every day, I have cable news on the TV from the time I get up in the morning until my wife gets home in the afternoon. It's not loud because I'm usually reading something while watching and I'm one of those guys who can't concentrate on the written word in a noisy environment. The TV says on while I wander around the house or even if I go outside for yard work since I know I'll only turn it back on when I come back in. Teri doesn't like that so I guess I'll just consider that a female thing.

When I go upstairs, he can watch whatever he wants and that is fine. But if he wants me to sit with him and watch or just enjoy his company, the loud TV is actually painful.

Note: When I told him my issues, he did go find his hearing aids. It is nice not have to shout to be heard.

DH almost always has the noise box on (as IL calls it). "For the company" he claims.

I've recently been sick for three weeks, and turned the TV on for two hours that whole time. Watched a show I recorded, while fast forwarding through the commercials. Once the show was watched, the box turned off. Blissful quiet all day long.

Another irritation is the tv must be on for hubby to fall asleep. For some reason the tv doesn't have the sleep.timer function the old one had. Guess who gets woken up to turn it off?

The tv hasn't become an issue, but I think there will be a day when it is problematic - ugh!

Our TV is unplugged and has only been used once this year to watch a DVD from the library, so the TV isn't a problem in our household. DH is inclined to listen to music more often than I am. I frequently enjoy it, since we do have similar taste in music and it's nice during the day when I am up and doing more active things. I do sometimes find it a distraction when I'm trying to read in the evening, or even worse, at 5 AM when I'm doing coffee and morning internet. I prefer a silent background at those times and agree with IL that the open floorplan concept is not a good one. We don't have an open floorplan, but we do have a very small house.

Imerullo, I wonder if Alexa by Amazon would turn off a TV? We use it to make sure our radio turns off in a certain number of minutes so it does not play music all night.

Since we are talking about ambient noise, I do login to a podcast when doing household chores if I know it will be a 15 minutes+ job. For me, podcasts have replaced radio. We have never listened to music radio, it has always been talk radio.

Yesterday on Science Friday I didn’t listen to the PBS version of Science Friday, I crafted my own menu of choices. I listened to Joe Rogan interview an academic who does research on science of the brain and mindfulness, and then I turned over to Radiolab to listen to a podcast about my uncle, the guy who discovered the age of the earth and found lead and everything.

I've read with some kind of noise source on in the background since I was a child; I tune in and out. But if I have company, I prefer "radio silence."

I actually turn the TV on the minute I enter a hotel room on a business trip, but at home, I prefer "Noises Off." Maybe because the hotel environment is so sterile, and I connect CNN to home.

At this stage, I really don't like competing with ambient sounds for conversation, unless those ambient sounds are birds and/or insects.

I would go insane with the TV on all day. It sometimes goes on in the evening but that's it. Lately, I have been blasting older jazz music while while cooking or doing house chores. My noise rant is the three old men households across the street - every day out come the mowers, blowers and vacuums. Nary a leaf shall taint their lawns. Vacuuming the lawn - how weird is that?

My absolute nightmare. I'm always happy for a rainy day, but sometimes even that doesn't stop the mower heads around here.
