I am starting to fit into some of the skinny clothes I put away, so it's like I am shopping from my own wardrobe.

Did some grocery shopping today (ouch!) but they had organic whole chickens BOGO so I paid $10 for two. We like to either roast or smoke them and then package up freezer packages for making enchiladas, casseroles etc. I can get five meals out of one chicken.

    Oh, that's a great idea.
If I've removed the chicken meat from the bones, I am cooking soup from the bones.

I do the same thing, pinkytoe. Usually put a whole chicken in the cp and pick it into meals, then use the broth for...whatever.

We've been really bad about grocery shopping without restraint, and it's been going on for the past couple of years. Yesterday, we had quite a small list, so I talked to DH about our tendency to go to the store with a $50 list and spend $150 anyway. I did a rough total in my head, and said we had a list that should cost about $67., so I wanted us to challenge ourselves to not go over $80. Over $80 would mean failure and under would equal success. He was onboard, and we spent $67.34, so I was really pleased with that. I should mention that we had already done a trip to a local farm store and another small grocery run earlier in the week, so we had already spent about $60. It was at least a step in the right direction of holding ourselves accountable for food expenditures again.

I stayed within budget this month and spent:

    $911.54 real estate taxes
    $192.62 groceries
    $226.00 gas
    $24.07 phone
    $85.07 internet/TV
    $57.01 water/sewer
    $2.00 lottery

In August if home heating oil prices drop enough (or if I see them starting to go up again) I will buy some otherwise it will be a miscellaneous expenses month:

    - Pay two utilities bills (the one I have now due mid August and the one I'll get mid August)
    - May be due for another oil change and tire rotation in August or if close to it, do
    - Have been thinking about a catalytic converter cage since I don't have a garage, but my vehicle is not one of those most targeted (DB and DSIL just got hit in the Midwest; they drive a Prius)
    - Stock up on any food staples whose price has stayed fairly stable, like canned tomatoes. With weight loss my GERD has gone away and I can eat acidic foods again
    - Stock up on other items such as reading glasses that I know I will go through to take advantage of sales tax holiday

Jeppy: The sales tax holiday wasn't on my radar, so thanks for mentioning it. Last year was the first time we were able to make good use of it because we needed a new mattress/box spring/bed fame. I don't know if we can make any use of it this year, but I will at least give it some thought.

PS: And I also need to make sure we don't spend money unnecessarily to "save" on sales tax!
