    Hip Pain and Bed Mattress

Curious--has anyone discovered a great mattress for arthritic hip pain?

I'm a side sleeper and my current mattress (too firm with an added latex topper) is really aggravating the pain.

Mattress shopping, in addition to being pricey, is an enigma...

Anyone found a solution to this?

    Muchas gracias...

When we moved here to Maine we bought really cheap foam mattresses in a box at Walmart. Like really cheap. I thought they felt weird but husband really liked them.

I have definitely had less hip pain. Don't know if it is related.

I can't say if this would help or not. I have various joint pains including shoulder, back, and hip, depending on the season and activities involved. I don't think I have chronic hip arthritis. I have a Sleep Number mattress and it helps to be able to adjust the firmness. Plus each side can be adjusted independently if that's an issue. My existing frame could be used, so I go the basic queen sized for under a thousand dollars. They have a number of bells and whistles that can drive the price up quickly. I've slept on much more expensive memory foam as a guest when travelling and was not impressed, however before the sleep number I added a foam topper to my old hard mattress and that was at least a help and a cheap thing to try.

I think a mattress that works is a sort of a personal thing. Sleep Number will let you try out their product lines as I'm sure other places will, but for me it's sort of like shoes and you really don't know until you've had one for a while.

I recommend this website to learn about matresses and buying a mattress:

I've had some issues with hip and shoulder discomfort in bed. I bought a wool topper from The Company Store that helped a bit. Our newest mattress has a softer, more padded top than what we had previously, so we are not currently using the wool topper because that makes the bed a bit too soft, which is problematic for DH's bad back.

Thanks for your comments and observations...and links. The search continues...now sleeping on the mattress in the other bedroom which is softer and the pain is much less.

Would love to get another one from the same maker, but it was a local manufacturer--and they are no longer in business...naturally! Really well-made and being "unbranded" it was an excellent buy...and still going strong 20 years later--it's flippable...

Sleep number is the only bed I have had since 2005. You adjust the firmness and it’s impossible to wear out as long as you can still get the parts.
