Ever go to the wrecking yard, take you tools, and pull a steering column? Just Curious
I did today. Just about ll my vehicles I have changed out or repaired the steering column. It is a worthwhile activity.
Okay---tomorrow, I'm going back to pull the receiver hitch offa the same van I got the column out of. How do you kids like that?
okay---that van i pulled the good used 118.000-mile motor out of has a tilt steering column that had the usual problem with it. also, one a the other clients tore it down to remove the key lock. so, its just good for parts. but yeah---hopefully i can get backta that wreckin' yard &^ remove some o' the littlebitty parts from the column(such as the turn signal switch, etc.) to place in my spare parts inventory. see---i can do that without having to pay for the whole column assy. yup. one o' my tricks ta save like crazy. hope that helps you some.
okay---I've got a ca 1981 chevvy 1-ton that started out as a swbill service truck. It has a lift with a bucket, something you need ta control vegetation in Zurra. but yeah--it needs some repairs, like the windshiled & door glass and steering column and exhaust system. it's got a damn good motor & tranny, though. Anyway--checked my parts bins and have the glass & winshield. In fact, I used both doors offa another one. about the column: the threads that hold the steering wheel on are boogered up, and the plastic horn contact is broken off. The p.o. did some dumb stuff,(like using the wrong steering wheel, etc)so I am reverse-modifying it. Well, the 79 K10 i recently aquired needs work on the column, because the PO said it would not start with the key. Sooo, I'm pulling both columns so I can make one work for the one-ton. See? I have the tilt column out of my 77 GMC that I pulled years and years ago, and replaced with a standard column i made up using parts from two other columns. When I had time, i fixed up the tilt, and I figure: why not use it in the K10? I happened to find a DEE-Luxe chevysteering wheel that was used in trucks and vans in the 90's on a shelf out back, so I'll use it in the k10. So, yeah--couple little projects right there. Should keep mee busy, awhile.
okay---well, guess what? I sat-n-watched a youtube that showed zer german auto being assembled by robots, and yeah---it reminded me that summa these cars being made now have "drive by wire" which is a euphemism for NO STEERING COLUMN. I believe that its totally stupid not to have a steering column. Case closed. Enough said. Yup.
okay---yesterday i pulled the steering collumn outta the 79 K10 i bought last winter. As i said before, i'm gonna re-use it in the C3500 i got last fall. But yeah---i'm gonna use the collumn outta my 77 GMC that i removed (and repaired for future use), 17 years ago, for the K10. It is a "Tilt" column. Thing is---on those, you gotta be careful not ta use the steering wheel to help hoist youself inta the cab, as it will damage the column by pulling the screws loose. So, I'll prolly put a grab handle somewhere on the cab. See? Hope that helps you kids some.
okay----i drug this beauty allllll the way home from where it was sitting, by the boyhood home o' BTK's grandfather (more about my trip, later). Anyway--it's in pretty good shape, though it needs everything. Even the steering collumn needsa work! Yup. Not a problem. First thing i did was take several of the weels off, and cut the tires up and throw 'em in the trash, along with some yard waste--tree branches and leaves, etc. But yeah--I got a clear title, and of course-- parts in my inventory for it. How do you like that?(see photo)
