    My love of sewing

My love of sewing has led to me making some of my clothes as Jackie. I have made a few of my dresses and skirts which I come up with design from my head. All started after a year I started crossdressing, mom talked me into it and one was a dress I came up with. Saved up my allowance money for the materials needed. Did figure what I wanted, it was a sleeveless knee length dress picking out a dark navy material and it came out right. Mom said I looked good in the dress.

Welcome to the group. I'm happy you have a supportive mother. Sewing gives you a lot more freedom of choice. Did she teach you to sew?

Wow! Sewing clothes is tedious and requires skill and knowledge. Good for you. I sew little here and there but household items only. I made napkins recently. I am planning more pillow covers.

I used to sew more than I do now. These days I tend to do more "mending" than actual sewing and I enjoy doing it by hand. Maybe I'll break out the machine one of these days.

I used to make all my clothes and curtains for the house. No more. The price of fabric became too expensive and I got tired. I find that it is just a nuisanc now! So I mend. I do have some fabric to make masks...our beginning pandemic ones are fraying!

Good for you Jackie, that you're a happy creative sewer - I'm always impressed and humbled by people with real skills and enthusiasm for their craft!! I used to do a lot of basic sewing, made most of my kids play clothes, some nicer things. Cut a lot of hand-me downs into something else, etc. Turned collars and cuffs for DH. But like nswef, I don't much anymore. new fabric is both too expensive in dollars and too cheap in quality. while I have the time, I don't have the patience, and it turned to drudgery, and I stopped. But I don't mind mending, either by hand or machine, and sometimes I get the bug to run something up...

I've often wished that I had this skill, especially since I've always had trouble finding things that fit me well. I'm a decent mender, but that's about it.

The expense and quality of fabric, and the dearth of fabric stores, is very disappointing. Its a skill that will die like so many others. Makes me sad, truly.
My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what I start. So far today, I have finished two bags of M&Ms and a chocolate cake. I feel better already!
