He was no Navy Seal, for sure. But yeah---you kids might enjoy visiting the site. Yup. Hopefully, there's someplace close by that serves yummy food. Yup. See this map----alla that was not very far from Cape Cod. Nope. (see photo)Attachment 6418
It's funny, because I recently read a reference to Chappaquiddick in a different context, perhaps one of my native plant groups, and I was reflecting on the fact that you can't think about this place without thinking about Ted and Mary Jo.

We went to Martha's Vineyard on our honeymoon, and took the ferry and drove around Chappaquiddick and saw the bridge. It was a really small pond. It seemed like you would have had to have going fast to make that mistake.

Chappaquiddick always makes me think of a VW ad, that was put out if I remember correctly, by National Lampoon magazine.

I went back and looked at pictures and I think they had changed a lot from 1968 to 1980 if the pictures were correct, so I take back what I said; in the old pictures it looked easy to miss the bridge if it was dark. They put up guard rails though.

One type of movie plot that I find most compelling are the ones where normal, "good" people encounter a circumstance where they face a decision to do the right thing or the wrong and they chose the wrong thing. Shallow Grave is a movie like that.

It's fascinating to think about what mental contortions go into decision-making when you are either in an opportunistic or a crisis situation. I often think about Ted Kennedy, as he paced the area early that morning weighing what he should have done, what he didn't do, and what information he will offer and what he will hide.

It was such a needless tragedy. Shame on everyone who hid the truth.. Did he ultimately do enough for the country in his role as Senator to atone for his negligence and dishonesty? I doubt it.

    That's such a great question.
In a way, I think he did, and in another way, I think he couldn't. You can never make up for something but we are supposed to live our lives going forward in a way that attempts for some redemption. I mean what are our choices, really?

His character was certainly absent. That poor young woman.
