Standard Ebooks - free ebooks

I recently discovered this. Standard Ebooks takes texts from Project Gutenberg, cleans up the formatting, spelling, etc., adds nice cover arts. They are a big improvement over basic PG texts. You download them and use whatever ebook app you have that works with epub format (not Kindle app). I just use the Apple Books app that comes with my Apple devices.

FYI, there is an open source ebook manager, Calibre which can be used to convert EPUB formatted books to Kindle's AZW3 or MOBI format. I believe that Amazon will also convert your EPUB books to one of Kindle's allowable formats if you email the file to your Kindle email address.

Calibre also has a built in web server that can be used to house your library as well as deliver them to your e-reader as needed. That requires a little more networking experience than most people have but is really quite easy to set up if you can follow directions regarding port assignments, public IP addresses for remote access and private IP addresses for home network access.

I used it to manage and access my private library of over 5000 titles for many years, but haven't used it recently. Additional features may have been added since then.

This website I mentioned has a different format for Kindle.

Also, Kindle app and Kindle are two different things. I’ve never been successful at reading a free ebook from a website like this in the Kindle app. A separate Kindle, yes, but I’m lazy right now and just going to read on my iPhone/iPad with Apple Books app.

Fair enough, but for anyone else interested, I highly recommend the free manager listed, for whatever that's worth.
