Yes, I have those, too, and there is definitely a downside to open shelves. Because we have very few they're not real hard to clean. But it's more than dust--it's grease, too--there's more than a dustrag involved in the cleaning. It's a good thing that I'm not a fastidious housekeeper. I think closed cabinets would make our house look even more closed in, which I don't want.
As for the white vs stainless appliances, we have white. DH really wants to swap them out for stainless, professional-grade appliances. I'm afraid the stainless is going to take some of the charm out of the kitchen. The white definitely gives it a retro vibe, but maybe not in a good way. We will be replacing the appliances because they are cheap and dysfuncional, so we will have to come to a decision soon.

I did see the dishwasher magnets that frugal mentioned and they are really cool--they come in so many varieties, and I was going to get one for this white dishwasher but then decided I kind of liked the white. The only thing I wonder about stainless is that these things go in cycles and they have been the popular choice now for at least 10 years, so are we due for something else?
I bought a new frig last year to replace a white one. The salesman gave a pitch stainless being most popular, on sale, white would have a lag delivery time, etc. I've pretty much regretted not getting white. Any claims of it not showing fingerprints or smudges are way over rated. My other appliances are actually what I think they refer to as almond and not as brilliant as pure white. I have a friend who has cabinets of natural maple, with plain doors and no opening hardware. It's a clean minimalist look, but I think costly.

I love white appliances, we've had avacodo , then almond, now white...we have been in the house 52 years. Still have a GE almond stove 1986.
Our kitchen is entirely white. Cabinets, fridge, dishwasher, oven/range, ceiling fan and countertop appliances such as Keurig coffeemaker and KitchenAid mixer, not to mention all plates, bowls, cups canisters and sink. My wife says it may be dated now but she put it together that way when we built the house 30 years ago because she liked it then and she still does.

White the appliances are classic because for decades that’s all they made. But yes, white appliances are classic. I think stainless steel is a modern classic.
I think anything else is a fashion trend

I've been using ChatGTP to restore and colorize some of my old family photos. I do like the old black and whites, but colorizing adds a bit of life too. My grandmother, labeled 1939. Not sure of the color accuracy, it's what I picked out. I think the appliance on the far left was a real "ice box" and the stove was state of the art?
