My agency just outsources our background checking to a professional firm that specializes in the process. Seems to work fine for our needs, and I suspect it is cheaper than if we did it ourselves.

Maybe they just want to verify your references are real people. Checking to see if they have or have had a job, life history or logical connection to you.

I've heard of people asking others to lie/speak up for them on references.
My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what I start. So far today, I have finished two bags of M&Ms and a chocolate cake. I feel better already!

I don't know, the more I think about it, the less I would want this job. Like if they wanted my kids' addresses, and their neighbors--no way would I bring that into their lives. I would say here's my references, and the rest is up to you, thanks for considering me.

I guess I'm the outlier here, but if I really wanted the job, I would try to do as requested. I've been asked to serve as a reference many times. If the person told me that the potential employer wanted my references, I would find that a bit unusual, but I wouldn't have a problem with it.

I agree but I need to get out of my current job situation. The long commute and the lack of accountability is driving me nuts. The new boss has no clue what to do and just wants to pal around with everyone. I have been begging for months for printer ink but he's never ordered it. In fact, almost everything I've asked him to order, he either doesn't or orders a small amount that gets used up within a month. Also told him that it's unfair the distribution of work in this place. Basically, everything falls on me because the other two can't be trusted to do it. I work 8 1/2 hours a day and another person only works 7 hours because she can't manage to get here on time and nothing is said or done to her. The other one is hearing impaired and uses that as an excuse for why she can't do anything except sit at her desk and video chat with friends. Meanwhile, I'm running around answering phones, handle people at the window, processing evidence that comes in, etc. Not fair at all and I'm sick of it.

Plus my husband is planning on retiring March 2027 and we still have one kid in college. If I can get another job, I will be able to get my pension plus an additional salary which will boost my income up a lot (over $100K/yr). The other job's insurance is better than what we have now so that will help too. I would pay less for a family insurance plan that he currently does.

When I had my last government background investigation, they met with my husband to interview him. We were both laughing with the craziness. Note: I had worked with this agency for 25 years before quitting and was not coming back to the same agency and the same group.

I think "unknown" would be adequate for any of these questions. Some of us have very little, if any, information beyond our own background so it is not unusual.

I went to the follow up meeting about this job. He did seem concerned about me not giving any info on my neighbors. He claims he plans on stopping by a few of their houses just to make sure there hasn't been any trouble at my house. Nothing said about getting references for my references. That's good. I should be good to go from here so hopefully in a few weeks, I can start the new job.

    That seems reasonable.

That seems pretty normal to me, when our neighbor's son applied to the sheriff's department, someone from the department came and talked to us briefly. Just asking if there were problems, strange vehicle traffic, loud fights, etc. That seems like due diligence in this day and age.

Yes, I agree but that was not how it was first presented to me. Asking around to make sure everything was OK at my house makes sense.
