Yes, I have those, too, and there is definitely a downside to open shelves. Because we have very few they're not real hard to clean. But it's more than dust--it's grease, too--there's more than a dustrag involved in the cleaning. It's a good thing that I'm not a fastidious housekeeper. I think closed cabinets would make our house look even more closed in, which I don't want.

As for the white vs stainless appliances, we have white. DH really wants to swap them out for stainless, professional-grade appliances. I'm afraid the stainless is going to take some of the charm out of the kitchen. The white definitely gives it a retro vibe, but maybe not in a good way. We will be replacing the appliances because they are cheap and dysfuncional, so we will have to come to a decision soon.
