That's for sure! I know so many families who have been torn apart over estate issues. In one instance, there is much ill-will over a teapot collection, of all things. I'm so glad my sister and I are such good friends and on the same page about all the important things.

yep, my brother and I did fine with our mother’s not-generous estate. As for her “ stuff” —he can have it! as it turns out, I think a fair amount of her furniture is still in her house that we sold to our cousin.

I have to admit, sadly, that the heirs in my family have not been good stewards of their gifts. I feel that the hard work of people who died with money to give wound up having it squandered, badly. In some cases, the gift became a curse to the beneficiary. I don't know how you prevent that from happening. I guess you can't. Relatives who scrimped and saved, only to have their life energy dishonored.

That's really sad. I think it can help to have role models who did well with the gifts. My mom was great with her inheritance, basically building it and managing it well and passing it along intact. I definitely think of my inheritance from her as family money that I need to steward and pass along. I think of my granddad, buying a property out in the country in about 1915, and then having it take care of his three children, and then having five of his grandchildren inheriting it over a hundred years later. I guess it remains to be seen what we do with it, but I really want to honor them and how they handled money with what I do with it. I'm kind of in awe of them for being such good stewards.

Seems like every week, we get estate planning companies free dinner offers in the mail. Many are at really good restaurants so it is tempting but I know it is just another lawyer money grab. I don't stress too much about leaving money for DD and grand-twins. The other grandparents are well off and will see they are all looked after monetarily. I figure if I can figure out how to mostly navigate old age ups and downs and take that burden off them, that is worth something.
