    MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA

This is not a joke, although it is making the snark rounds of social media. While the average Canadian may not know what this acronym means, you’d better know what it means if you’re going to work in Canadian government.

For those folks dying to know, like me, what in God’s name this could possibly mean, here is what this official government acronym stands for:

Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two‑Spirit (a term that is used by some First Nations to describe people who embody both masculine and feminine spirits), Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual people.

    From the Newsweek article:

. ..The full acronym has been used for years in government, advocacy, and community contexts to emphasize intersectionality. It is intentionally lengthy in order to name everyone who has historically been left out of national conversations about violence, justice, and safety…

One wag in a comment section where this article is making the rounds said this:

Get out of Canada now while you still can.

    seems like good advice

The MMIWG stuff is so shocking and if you google it on youtube, there are many documentaries and articles about MMIWG awareness and governmental inquiries.

Yes, there was a good feature film about it, I saw a tv mystery ( not so good) and I’ve heard several podcasts on the topic.

The snarking doesn’t have anything to do with the tragedy of these indigenous women, it has to do with lumping everyone together in a bell hooks dream of intersectionality.

Generational poverty, abuse, and violence of indigenous women—-one thing, one complex thing.

Men running around ideating as women— another thing.

To me, it doesnt seem respectful to the problems and issues in either group.

I do see your point, IL. I don't know the backstory, but it's quite possible that to get one set of issues addressed (laws, programs, etc under government purview) it was necessary to tie one to the other, for the purposes of buy-in. Sometimes (hah!!) politics is messy!

okay-----this topic is DEEPLY offensive, and of course i am DEEPLY, DEEPLY offended by the appalling lack of sensitivity, here. That being said, the same stuff goes on waaaay up north dere in Alaska. On a regular basis, you see Missing Persons Cases posted for Indigenous Persons (Natives, 'Skimoes, whatever you choose ta call 'em.) So yeah---it seems to happen so frequently that its a part of the stereotype. Yup. Hope you don't find this offensive.
