I notice there's a daily rant thread that gets lots of mileage! :)

And I thought it would be nice to have a place for daily raves to complement the daily simple pleasures and to bring the focus back to our collective quest for simple living.

My rave for the day:
Success in working through the emotional struggle I've been having about letting go of the things that no longer serve a purpose in our lives. Talking it through with everyone on this board has been extremely helpful. Yay!

***Moderators - is there a way to edit the thread title?

This one seems too wordy. I think The Daily Rave would be better, but can't change it. Are you guys able to do it? Thanks!~

Daily rave:
Dreading the 6:30am dog walk after Siri tells me it's 7 degrees, but after crabbily putting on the triple layers and the scarf and the hat and the mittens and finding poop bags and the leash and worrying about the dog pulling me and me slipping on the ice--but then to get outside and realize it's not that cold, and the sunrise is giving me a red sky in the east and the dog finds a little snippet of unfrozen babbling brook to drink out of, I realize the trouble is so worth it.

Cool! That makes me feel connected with you, FloatOn--my DH always tells the kids (who live far away) that when they look at the moon, he's looking at the moon, too, and that's a way to be together.

When the boys were little they stayed with my parents a lot while we traveled up to 42 weekends a year for art shows. The last thing we'd say on the phone to them every night was "Hug the phone, kiss the moon".

I wonder if we'll start saying that again next year with both boys away at college?

This isn't exactly a rave about my own life, but I fell in love with that mini camper - "the perfect thing" - and it really started my day with good cheer and a smile. It could happen, which means pretty much any good thing could happen. :)

A nice surprise - all kinds of bulbs have started growing in my new yard! Some yellow crocuses have bloomed and I can't wait to see what else will come up.
Also, a mystery shrub turns out to be a quince; I just love the color of the blossoms.

Maybe it's a false spring - it's sure pretty.

Enjoying our weekend of much needed rain. I think it's the first rain of the year here. Have had the whole house opened up and enjoying the fresh air blowing thru.

Rave - yesterday we had very light rain and misting alternating with bursts of bright sunshine. Instead of giving in to the temptation of staying inside, we all spent most of the day outside enjoying the rain in the garden. The misty weather was great for us working in the garden and for the pups playing. Whenever a little rain shower came by, my little boxer girl and I ran under the patio umbrella and rode it out as they only lasted a few minutes. The showers didn't bother Dh or my little fluffy puppy boy at all, they just went on about their business.

Sweetana - the retreat sounds very relaxing.

Rainbows everywhere! There was a triple rainbow, just looking out our front window yesterday. I love the views here in Ashland, and the ever-changing sky.

Two years ago SO planted some gorgeous red flowers in a window box that's been sitting on our deck since then. We had rain off and on from Thursday through Saturday night. Apparently they were perennials because sunday that box had 5 of those brilliant red flowers blooming like mad. Such a fun surprise to look out and see them.

Geila
2-10-15, 2:47pm
jp1 - that sounds wonferful! Especially that they're red in the middle of winter.

Yesterday I dropped off a bunch of stuff to our neighborhood Goodwill. I feel so happy knowing that these items, which were no longer being used, will have the chance to bring enjoyment to someone else. May they live long and prosper!

I am finally saying a not-at-all fond farewell to my cell phone company. Bundling cell and internet had given us a $10 discount, losing that was the only unfortunate part about the breakup. After much patience and way more politeness than I'm usually known for, the internet provider came up with a discount that saves me $20 off the cost of the internet service instead of the $10 I was getting before. So not only did I give Verizon the boot and save myself about $50 a month, I'm saving an extra $10 because of it.

Called internet provider 2x to get them to lower the rate and said I was going to check where else to get service. Called back again and they had me transferred to the resolution desk. They lowered the bill $30/month. It still is high but can live with it. Guess they realized I was serious about quitting!

You CAN make steel cut oats in a rice cooker! In my anti-stuff zeal over the years, I had dismissed the very idea of a rice cooker as just one more thing to clutter up the kitchen counters, but since my house mate has one, I can totally see how awesomely useful this little appliance can be for not very much money :) When the day comes that he moves out, I am getting one of my own, for sure!

I hate cooking but I love my rice cooker. Not only can I cook rice without it getting mushy, but I chop up a potato and put it in liquid in the bottom part and then put a frozen salmon or tilapia fillet with some chopped up vegetables on top, turn on the rice cooker for 40 minutes and everything comes out perfectly. I've even made "boiled" eggs by steaming them in the steamer tray. There is practically nothing you can't make in those things. :)

My year of using a cash-back reward credit card offered by my credit union last year just paid off - because I am diligent about NEVER carrying a credit card balance, I just got $103.77 deposited back into my savings account! I have to say, it was a big adjustment to get used to paying for things with plastic. I am such a cash person, but once I got over the fear that I would somehow overspend, I haven't looked back. The only thing I make a point of paying cash for is gas for the car because it is cheaper per gallon that way. The only exception is when I am out traveling, it's a credit card all the way, baby!

I attended a party celebrating four coworkers retirement. It was nice to reflect on how things have changed in my profession over the last five years since my retirement. I came away refreshed and really happy for them that they made it. We took a few seconds to remember those we knew and worked with who sacrificed their lives before making it to retirement. We left part of ourselves behind. Some left all of themselves. I am thankful for the gift of life.

The plumber I called after looking for reviews on Yelp showed up within an hour, did a perfect job and didn't overcharge me.

Last time I had a "plumber" in, in Bisbee, someone the tenant insisted was great (probably because he gave her a blow discount for recommending him), he went under the house and cut the wrong pipe, he then tried to blow a clog out of the other pipe with his mouth because he forgot his compressor, he cut a gigantic hole in my shower wall and then replaced my brand new bath tap with a chrome disk the size of a dinner plate, and after six hours, when it turned out it was the mixer I was concerned with in the first place that was the problem, not the pipe or the faucet, wound up cutting out the back wall of my closet and severing two studs in a support wall of my house in the process. And then tried to charge me nearly $1000. I was apoplectic for months, and have refused to call a plumber in eight years.

And then today ... this went as smooth as silk. So Nice, Thank You Donnie and Dan!

had a chip repaired in my windshield a couple of years ago and it started to crack last week. I think from being parked outside during ice and snow.
Started with a 3 inch crack which is repairable and free with Allstate Ins. The day before the mobile unit was scheduled to come, I went outside for lunch and the 3 inch crack was over a foot long. That means I had to pay $278. Not happy and if I had been just a little quicker to report and schedule I would still have my $278.

I volunteer doing migrating birds counts in the springtime. Our station is a slightly isolated place in the foothills that requires a half mile hike. It's an interesting project and we usually get a few visitors who come to watch or help. Today, an older couple and their son and daughter in law spent a couple of hours. Turns out they are a professional performing group of singers. At a slow time they gathered together and sang the old stand-by, "I'll Fly Away", acappella. If your not familiar with it, it's an old spiritual song or hymn that's been adopted by blue-grass and country groups. Not the best acoustics, but it sounded appropriate and nice.

He lost that part of it.
The railroad came through his farm in the 1880's and the deed said that the land would revert back to the farmer if the railroad was abandoned. When the railroad gave up that section of rail, the local government took over the line and made it into a bike trail. So, that was wrong but typical of government.

Some people who use the bike trail dont stay on the trail. They cut across his land, open gates, cows escape, etc. Not a good scene.

The company said they had spoken with my insurance company, who would cover 60% so I would "only" owe 23k! OMG! Because of my income, this company will pick up 95% of the co-pay, I will owe $200. Thank God for this group. Boo to the doctor for not explaining this test costs over 50k before having me do it. She had to know, genetic testing is what she does. I am so grateful.

That is a mighty fine guitar, WilliamSmith!

A quick story about it. I have been playing an electric guitar that belonged to my dad. Unfortunately the tailpiece and bridge have weakened over time and needed repair. I have to send it back to the Gibson factory in Nashville for repairs. I haven't bought a guitar for 21 years. So this Gibson SG seemed like just the solution. She is wonderful to hold. Birch Beer aka Pennsylvania Dutch root beer. "made from an old Pennsylvania Dutch recipe" according to the can. Used to drink it as a kid and had almost forgotten about it til a friend dropped off some cans.
Oh man, it hits the spot on a hot summer day, but it's 170 calories and a whopping 41 grams of sugar per can. A very rare treat!

and a semi-related story: I attended a new student mixer at my college in Ohio. Student: where are you from? Lainey: Pennsylvania Student: Are you Dutch? Yes, he asked that as a serious question..!

For years, I thought I was part "Dutch" because the message got mangled from "Pennsylvania Dutch (Deutsche)." I guess after a world war or two, "Dutch" sounded more acceptable or something. But the truth will out. Landed here in 1739 on the Loyal Judith, IIRC.

I am done with the local grocery store nearest me. They either don't have the items in the ad or my digital coupons will not work from my grocery store card.

Talking to the store manager has gotten me no where.

Sending emails to the store's corporate offices has also gotten me no where. The person who responds is clueless despite numerous emails.

I am a person that has enough with the games this company is playing.

I can shop at another store that is further away without dealing with the problem.

19Sandy
8-25-16, 9:53am
This is a small rural town, and they won't be getting more competition.

The store is really close to me too so I can walk there in 10 minutes.

There is no point in having digital coupons that won't work and then acting as if it is the customers fault either.

I have written a novel to the person in charge of customer service and it just isn't getting through to them that they have a problem with their computer system not working.

The cashiers have said I am not the only one but no one listens to them either. I understand that because I have been in that position in jobs.

That is why paper coupons are better, you have the things right in your hand to prove your point.

Paper coupons are rare nowadays though.

I have two raves - the first one was that I was gifted a beautiful, new looking crock pot by two women RV'ers that came into the gallery! We got to talking, and I told them I was living in the back with no real kitchen and that I had just bought an electric frying pan and how it had made a huge difference in the quality of my life. They said they had just upgraded to a different crock pot and would I like their old one! A win-win for all, they de-cluttered their RV and I can now make stews and spaghetti sauces! So now I have a rice-cooker, an electric frying pan, a crock pot, a toaster, and a coffee maker! A lot of things, but until I get an actual kitchen built I am all set up!

My second rave is that I slept 8.5 hours last night, all the way through, no waking up in the middle and no alarm clock! I forgot how great that feels!

Lainey

Kind of a generic rave. I'm at the tail end of a 2 week long respiratory illness, not severe, just fatiguing with my body working to fight off a cough/cold. I took some time off work at first but last week I basically powered through and am now enjoying doing nothing for a few days so I can really rest.
But it all made me think of those millions of workers out there who may not have a paid sick day, or who have little paid sick time, and have to go to work when they are just not feeling all that well. (and a disclaimer here that I do not mean it's a good idea to go to work when you are contagious) I know of a number of people who did their jobs while fighting hormonal headaches, or back pain, or colds and coughs, etc. and they managed to keep going because of a strong worth ethic and knowing others were counting on them. Kudos.

Having a non-emotionally involved person is a good idea. I hope you can toss stuff because simply rearranging or organizing won't work. In addition, what you think you can give away isn't always possible. Sometimes it is really just trash.

my mother spoke seriously to my dad about what they want to accomplish down there and they decided they wanted to treat it as cleaning out before they die, no holding onto stuff, especially large furniture, that they "might" need. Heaven helping, this is their last place before dying so anything not wanted by me or my brother goes. This is a big turn around in my mother's way of thinking and that she even has goals for this is nothing short of amazing.

The quietness broken by an approaching flight of honking geese. Then restored by their passing.

I went to an event last night that was wonderful. A fundraiser for an organization I work for that provides mindfulness outreach for homeless youth. There was a screening of the short documentary and talks by lots of great people. I brought my friend, a Buddhist nun, with me and we had a lot of fun.

Contentment = a full belly from my clean-out-the-refrigerator chicken & pasta dish cooked in my electric frying pan, being comfy in my cozy tiny home, playing guitar during my "working hours" behind the counter, listening to soul-wrenching blues on the Ronnie Earl Pandora channel and a couple of sterling silver pendents to work on. My old life seems very far away and it's barely been two months!

a beautiful snowy day that I had to go out in, it was so pretty I didn't mind a bit. Too bad my dad waited and bought a huge pot of mums two weeks ago, lol. Maybe they'll make it.

You are really an inspiration for those of us that often feel caught up in a rat race of our own making. You are showing us another way to think of life. Thought of you when we went in Whole Foods yesterday.

a wonderful night's sleep to wake up to Bernice (my dog, lol) in her winter sleep pose, all curled up in a tight ball. She opened her eyes and just looked at me a while and then the tail started wagging. Who needs a man???

I'm feeling proud of myself. I have been feeling very down recently and it's been hard going through a lot whilst feeling very alone where I live. I moved over here just over a year ago but with work, my daughter and various other things I have found it hard to get out and meet new people. I mean I know people through work but I don't really know anyone outside of work. I looked on meetup.com which has helped me loads in the past when I've moved to a new area but there really wasn't anything I was interested in. One of the problems with where I live is that it is a huge retirement location, people move here when they're in their 60s plus so most activities seem to be set up for that age group during working hours. So, I bit the bullet a few days ago and set up my own group where I was very honest and talked about it bringing people who are feeling lonely in their younger years together, I admit I was a little worried no-one would sign up or reply. BUT....in less than 24hours over 30 people had signed up and I had a load of messages from people saying they felt the same as what I had wrote! I am just back from meeting one of them for coffee and it was wonderful, we now also have a cinema date set up with a bigger group of us and loads of ideas. I might actually start having a social life that isn't just on the internet, talking to my SO or going on playdates with 7-year olds :)

We had family night last night, it went really well! I had about 50 kids I think, I am doing the attendance in my data system now. Part of my job is to show that people are coming to things of course, and collaborating with the school, so I did both. I had a lot of teachers who came and helped with the stations for art and sports. Now today is a day off school, so I had a couch delivered this morning and will go in for a few hours.

Nearly 80 degrees today, and went to a place in the park to walk where I seldom go. Fun times! Walking squirrels collecting nuts, seeing boaters on the waterway, watching people walk their dogs.

I bought a house! It's an investment property; I'm going to rent it out.

It's a sweet little place in a great location. I want to be a good landlord - offering someone a good place to live at an affordable rent.

DH is brilliant at building things, but he has another talent, he is a finder. He is like a bloodhound. You tell him " go boy, you go find this" and he will find it.

So today I came home from the theater, it was 6pm, wine time! So much wine time! Yet, I had only 2 ounces of wine in the bottle. We have no beer. We have no vodka. I whined to DH waaaaannhh where is the alcohol, do we have anything drinkable? He "went to work" in the cupboards and moved cans and cereal packages and found liqours, and Scotch, but they are not drinkable. Then, buried in the back of the high cupboard he found a box of red wine. Score!!!

You can be, too. There's a rhyme to address him. I learned it from two different Catholics, both from California. You have to be in the act of looking, not just sitting and waiting for revelation:

"Tony, Tony,
Listen, listen!
Hurry! Hurry!
Something's missing!

Tony, Tony,
Look around
Something's lost
And must be found!"

My wife was so frustrated she did not find a shirt she was looking for, I got her to declutter our wardrobes togehter with me. Had to go to the trash bin 3 times, another two big bags on sale at ebay!

Rumpaged through the whole appartment afterwards, throwing away everything that was in the way and could not run fast enough. Last time our appartment was so clean was before we moved in ;-)

I allowed myself to splurge and buy pre-minced garlic in a tube last week - it isn't called Simple Living for nuthin! Without having a real kitchen to cook in it has made my life immeasurably easier to cut out that sticky step of mincing garlic cloves without the benefit of having running water nearby. Sometimes you gotta just pay up a little more to make things easier :)

I read a book (and have remembered it so far) in a week, not a month or two! I am hoping with more practice I will get back to 2-3 a week but that may be unrealistic. This is the first book that wasn't a huge struggle where I found myself counting pages and re-reading because I forgot. I got lost in the flow of the book even though it wasn't some great book. It was like really reading again.

For several days, I have planned to go to the library to get some DVDs for New Year's Weekend - and I kept thinking, I hope they have the latest season of The Game of Thrones (Season 6) --- and they did! I am amazed because it was just released last month and it was Friday night before a long weekend! Sometimes it takes months for them to get stuff like this and then they have a problem with theft so they have to order new ones! With that and a TWD marathon on AMC, I am all set. Plus, it might get warm enough for a walk round the neighborhood!

I have had 3 regular meals and some snacks at regular times, On a Saturday!! I tend to make my mood worse by having irregular schedules around sleep and eat. I also led a conference call and my teacher (a Buddhist nun) just raved at the end about how it was run. Timing, tone, good questions, etc.

The grocery store had high-quality bread for 10 cents (I only bought 2 to leave some for other people).

I was able to open the windows in my car and apartment to get fresh air.

A nice haul at the Goodwill today--2 lovely champagne flutes which I may give to my son and dil when the new baby comes, or may keep for myself! An unopened set of dice for my grandson for his birthday this month. A set of dominos, 30 years old, still in the wooden box and complete with rules, three ironware custard cups (now I have to start making custard!) the complete set of Ken Burns Civil War, since have been wanting to rewatch it now that I know a lot more family geneaology, and some movies--Caine Mutiny, Dr. Strangelove, American Beauty, something about trains, something about musicians, and an episode of the Lou Grant show. All for 16 dollars, while husband peacefully ate donuts and read magazines in the car (he is happier there.) And the sun was shining through it all!
