Kids, cell phones (ignoring what they are supposed to be doing) and "cell talk" (not sure if it is due to texting or what).
How the heck and I supposed to know if the thing your righting, is supposed to be a B, a R, or a K, since your using the same symbol for it, and your spelling is already atrocious.

I had that experience realizing that by giving my kids money for downpayments on houses, I will be working a year or two more. I am still glad I did it, but it's a sobering thought.

since I don't want to reply to the YMOL thread I'm quoting as this has minimal to do with YMOL. My rant today is I am a martyr but such would be my own darn fault.

I am kind of contemplating saving up some money to help my mom with house repairs. If I saved $500 a month, I could put 5k to help her in a year or so. Why am I taking this on? Even in contemplation now. >8) Eh because the pipes barely even pump water in many rooms ... I'll inherit part of the estate some day (hopefully not soon) but even then only part of it (not a house for myself - it's split - somehow - by selling probably though I suppose there are other ways).

I'm contemplating joining my bf in trying to start a business in our free time. I don't have an entrepreneurial bone in my body I don't think. It's not even how I'd choose to spend my life. (Yea everyone who can't even hold down a @#$# job *EVER* in their life is contemplating "starting a business" these days. But we know how to work at any rate, even if not easily how to find jobs, so that's part doesn't apply - but the horribleness of jobs out there these days might - him more than me.). Not what I would do if single ...

Are you an only child? A couple of my friends did something similar with their mom, after their dad died. (only one relative was close)
Unfortunately, they didn't have much she needed, because in the late 80's there was a house fire, and the house was replaced.

ANM, I would urge you to very carefully consider throwing that much money at a piece of real estate you don't own as a possible investment, If and when that times comes, come here and throw out the facts and we can help you analyze the cost /benefit.

If you are doing it purely to help your mother, that is another issue, but still it is has lots of problems.

I'm annoyed that the sore throat I've had for close to 4 weeks is getting worse and I probably have to stop ignoring it and dismissing it as a virus. Money on the doctor's co-pay, time wasted at the doctor and money on an antibiotic.

This is not a big peeve but is was somewhat annoying, although culturally interesting.

This sfternoon I attended a dramatic production by our town's Black Repertory theater company. It was a serious play about a woman who goes after her former slave for a sexual relationship.

The audience hooped and hollered throughout the play, and even laughed at the struggles of the (evil) white woman as she lay on the floor dying. Granted, there were little ironic bits of humor in the play as there should be in a good drama. But felt like I was attending a big cartoon production. All of the laughter throughout was disconcerting. I dont mind a bit of audience participation especially in films, but this was too much.

I cant help but wonder how the actress felt as she played the dying woman. Maybe she played up the comic aspects a bit?

This was a Sumday afternoon crowd and I really think they were far more kid-like than other audiences I have been part of at the Black Rep. There were large groups of college kids, and I wonder if they were the loud, laughing ones? I hate to say that because I was seated in the midst of one such college group and while they might have talked to each other during the production, just a little, talked about the play, they were NOT the hoopers and hollerers.

It was just--odd.

I think I will avoid matinee performances at the Black Rep. Evening audiences are more serious.

So, I apparently being hot wasn't just from the weather, looks like I have the flu or a virus. Feeling horrible today and did last night. Managed to watch Poldark while lying in bed in a stupor. My brain is feeling fuzzy and I feel woozy and dizzy. Hope this thing passes fast because the weather is now lovely.

This annoyed me today. I was at my primary to get my physical. She has all new front desk staff who have both been there 8 mos now yet still can't seem to get shit done. As I waited to check in, the receptionist said this to a patient on the phone, "He wrote declined. THat's all, I don't know why. No, I do not know why it is declined, it just is," with a tone like "don't bother me". Before she checks me in, she swivels around and says to the other receptionist, "do you believe the shit we have to put up with?" The other woman said, "I know, it's ridiculous what people want." WHAT??? You say all this in front of a line of actual patients, plus you did nothing to help the patient dealing with the denial issue.

I think being a receptionist is incredibly hard and annoying, I would not want that job. But can you try to put on your game face and not swear about patients in front of patients? Jeebus. My doctor would've fired those two on the spot if she knew but because she tolerates no BS she has trouble keeping front desk staff and I didn't want to ruin her day.

Yeah, that is pretty poor customer service...yikes! It reminded me of last summer when I fell down the stairs and broke my foot. I somehow got myself to the urgent care, tear-stained face, wobbly as hell on crutches, and the receptionist is trying to jam a clipboard into my hands while I am desperately trying not to fall over. The whole front desk was so rude and unhelpful (even to the doctor that saw me) I decided it warranted a call to the office manager the next day to discuss how the front line treats their patients in their fancy new office.

I work in a college library. And I swear, I don't know how some of these kids get into college. The one working on my shift right now doesn't know how to tell how a newspaper's sections work. A guy came up to the counter and asked for the Times. We get two papers: the Times and the Clarion. The papers are not delivered all in one piece: they are sometimes in three or four sections each. She hands him the "top section" of the Times. He asks, Is this it? It seems awfully small for a Sunday paper.

As he walked away, I knew that couldn't be all of the paper. I go over to the counter, next to where she is sitting, and lo and behold, there's the other sections of the Times.

Do these kids not know to look at the top of the paper for the name of it? Maybe they've never seen a newspaper. This particular one seems like a real dim bulb.

I know I sound like a b*tch.

Certain things about my living situation can be very trying here in New Mexico - the track lighting just went out in my main room. I think there is a short in the wiring that happened this morning when I plugged in the electric heater to take the chill off the room (which I will HAVE to use when it gets really cold so the pipes don't freeze). It's always something in this really old adobe miner's shack...sometimes I miss my easy (but boring) life back in Michigan....

I had a horrible day dealing with ex suing me and found out the court can make you use retirement money to pay for college so I was not a happy camper and saw little way out of my situation. Came home to find a letter from Medicare, I can start using it on 2/1. I wasn't expecting to get it until 3/18. What a relief. My COBRA runs out 1/1 and because of all my medical needs I had decided to pay for an expensive NYS Marketplace plan that takes all my doctors. I couldn't imagine how I was going to pay those high premiums and then the Medicare letter came in the mail.

I went for my mammo today and yet another front desk staff was rude to a patient. A patient showed up for her appt (a quite frail, elderly woman) who had a script in her hand and had an appt. The desk staff said it was the wrong prescription and she'd have to get the right one and re-schedule her appt and she said it rudely, the poor woman looked like she was going to cry and said it is hard for her to get out for appts, couldn't they just call her doctor? The same exact scenario was happening to me on the other side of the desk, the woman helping me said, "oh this script is incomplete, let me call your doctor and get the right one faxed over." The old lady leaves and the other receptionist goes, "she has the wrong script and thinks she's gonna just waltz in here and get her mammogram." My receptionist agreed with her even though she had just helped me out of the same situation. WTH? And the old lady was the only other person in the place, they weren't busy. I should've spoken up.

No compassion for the elderly anymore at all. And, you were treated one way and she was treated another way. I wonder if they will double bill her for two appointments to make extra money and she won't understand how or why they did that.

This is always a problem with having neighbors, especially when you work opposite them. I remember a job where I would have to occasionally work nights, and they didn't give your body time to adjust from day to night. It is time to sell or ditch both those things. We have 3 sick people in the house and we will continue to have two treadmills. How stupid is that? They want to meet in the basement in a little while and "discuss" how the massive clean out will go. No need, I already see how it's going to go. I am retaining a land line anymore for the sole purpose of deadling with insurance companies and other bureaucratic organizations.

I'm retaining a land line to get a clear connection. One of the (three? four?) clerks I talked to today was on a cell and was barely intelligible. And of course there can be no overlap in conversation, or you lose the whole thing. Every time I talk to a sibling they forget they have no battery and I'm talking along to nothing. Then they have to fiddle around, plug in, call back. I'm not a fan of cell phones in general--for talking, anyway.

We are new to Obamacare. I wondered aloud to DH "where is our insurance card, why havent they mailed it." And the next day, on cue, the insurance company mailed a letter saying they wont be mailing an insurance card because it is the end of the year. If I want one, I can go to their site and print it.

hahahaha this is ridiculous, they could have just as easily mailied that damn card as the letter.

I haven't searched back too far to see if this has already been b*tched about, but I am really peeved about seeing Christmas displays and even trees up in the neighborhood and all over town. We can't even get to Thanksgiving. It all starts consecutively with Halloween, as if the holiday in between doesn't even exist.

I want simplicity---one holiday at a time! I'm so tired of stuff being crammed down my throat. But I seem to be in the minority. Everything just gets milked for all it's worth these days---even Veterans Day is more like Veterans Week.

It's no wonder by the time they're over we are just SO DONE with the holidaze.

already sick of holiday crap, my mom has been asking for a month what all my kids want for Christmas. I don't know! they are grownups. And there seems to be no way out of this. I would love to celebrate something more in line with my religion/non-religion so I just keep it simple and include that they have Jewish grandparents (I have been doing Hannukah with someone my whole life one way or another). Still the frenzy does not help the simple, family-focus celebration.

I believe that the apotheosis of human communication through telephone was during dominance of Bell landline systems. Clear audible sounds. Sure sometimes there was static, downed lines, but when those systems were fully functioning, they worked incredibly well!

The fact that my aging hearing loss coincides with degradation of phone service suggests a relationship. But no, one DOES NOT in any way influence the other. No! I refuse to accept that! Hahaha.

Full disclosure--I used to maintain those lines. So thank you! In my dotage, I've developed a case of whooshy tinnitus--it doesn't really affect my hearing, but it's annoying at times. Oh, how I love old age.. (Where is that ambulance emoji when you need it?)

Disgusting that washing machines are now made so shabbily. We just bought a Speed Queen (made in the USA... Ripon, WI to be exact) that has manual dials, does not have a locking lid and lets you adjust the amount of water needed. We were told that this will not be the case in the near future. The warranty is for 3 years but says to expect over 20 years of use. It was a bit spendy but if it lasts and does what we want it to .... well worth the price. Can't believe many washing machines no longer have agitators and have flimsy computer panels for settings. Supposedly, the government is deciding how much water washing clothes should take and are making manufacturers comply. We were told that soon Speed Queen will not be allowed to make this simple and well made model. Sigh....

We should have bought that Speed Queen last summer when our washer went kaput. We had about 3 days to buy a washer before some sort of deadline which I can no longer recall, so we just bought a floor model from the appliance store down the street. I do not love it. The groaning and moaning and long cycles are annoyng.

I hate the fact that I cant adjust the water level. I tend to set everything to "full load" and "extra heavy wash" and other settings to make upl for it.

In the digital age there is only a margin the separates things that make life better and easier and what prevents us from enjoying non digital reality. I was a guest at a friend's house house for dinner and the host always makes a special effort to prepare a fine meal. One of those events where you wear a nice shirt and might take a $15 bottle of wine. When everyone seated themselves, three pulled out their smart phone and placed them to the right of the soup spoon as if it was right out of Miss Mannerly's book. The only one without was me. Most of the dinner went by without anyone checking emails or getting calls. Then someone brings up a recent event of a little importance that no one can remember the details of. So off goes everyone's google excursions and suddenly things go from a good conversation to people looking at their smart phone and reading. Of course, then other things come up and the phone binging goes on for a long time. Sometimes I'd rather not know than googling.

Nope, I found a payment center to pay it in person!

Now, I am filing a compliant against the company for locking me out.

Won't let me log in and won't send me new passwords for the account but charging extra for paying on the phone?

I can't even verify that the bill was paid by going online if I mail the bill!

People who call the library and insist they have been in here using our computers before, so they can't understand what's going on when I say they are for faculty, staff and students only. "But the manager lets me use them whenever there's a free one." "What manager?" "That heavy-set girl."
Well, we do have someone who could be described that way, but she's not the manager and I seriously doubt she would let a total stranger use the computers. We don't even let alumni use them.

It's the last week of classes, and next week is exam week. A couple of our student workers quit mid-semester. He has new people starting tomorrow and next week. That's just grand. All the books are due back Dec. 12 (because it is the official end of the semester) so not only will I be swamped with book returns, the poor kid will be completely overwhelmed with the insanity that is the end of the semester.

We have to watch them like hawks when they're new. Heck, we have to watch them like hawks sometimes when they've been here three years. This morning, I caught one of our "old" students trying to check out books to someone without an ID card.

To put the icing on the cake, these kids will not remember anything they learned on the job when they return in mid-January.

Here I thought, all I have to do is get through this week and next. Thanks for the early Christmas gift, Boss.

I understand the peeve and probably have been the friend too many times. :-(

But, she might have gone to the inexpensive place and for one reason or another did not like it. You did ask a question not a statement. Wonder what would have been the answer if you said "I really want to go to XX. It is a convenient and well priced place".

I had that issue at work. A group ALWAYS wanted to go to the closest eating place. I hated it due to poor meals and cost. So I would suggest and be turned down. My choice to go or not go.

Best probably to be honest and just say, Oh that one is just to expensive for my budget and too far away. Can we compromise and find something in the middle? With YELP online, it should have a lot of suggestions with reviews.

Chicken lady
12-13-16, 8:01am
If you're going to dissect semantics, the friend's response was a non-sequitur. A younger me had a lot of difficulty with that sort of thing, because I would have said "then you should. Pause. So do you want to meet at (convenient and inexpensive place)?" Because she didn't actually answer the question, she made a new statement that was connected in her mind but not my mind. She might as well have said "oh. I want to get my nails done."

now I'm very evolved and I say "does that mean you don't want to go to (convenient and inexpensive place)?" Also I don't have very many friends. :)

Actually my peeve was more along the lines of getting asked "do you want to meet up?" me: Yes Friend: paraphrasing "oh good, then you decide all the details on when and where and what time..." And then getting responses back like "oh I can't meet that day, or I don't like that food, or etc..."

My preference when I ask someone to meet up is to also give some options so the social burden is not on them to come up with all the ideas, dates and times. Just a simple social nicety in my mind. It should Not be up to your friends to come up with ideas to fill your social calendar, there has to be some reciprocity in setting these things up.

So BIL came over last night--as you guys know, we're selling the house, but he's broke. He has 7k to his name. A minimum wage seasonal job. After having EVERYTHING provided to him by his mother for 47 years of his life, reality is kicking him in the gut. He's 53 and he definitely should be as freaked out as he is right now.

I've given him my copy of Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover, because even though I told him being able to get by is a simple mathematical equation--your outgo cannot exceed your income--I truly don't think he gets it. But he hasn't read the book and continues to complain and cry.

His "poor me" stuff is starting to grate on me, because he comes over and will say to us "Ahh! it's nice and warm in here!" (64)--he says his heat is now set at 58. Or he will sit down and say "Must be nice to have TV" (he cut his cable, which was wise, but we gave him an Amazon fire stick months ago and he still hasn't plugged it in. I don't think he knows how). Or, he will wander over to our refrigerator and open the door. He won't ask if I have anything specific. He'll just stand there and look, and when I'm not looking he'll take food or a soda or beer. Just weird stuff.

But last night when he was over, he sat and talked for 15 minutes about a friend of his, a beautiful girl half his age, whose mother is in advanced stages of colon cancer. They're in Costa Rica in hopes of an alternative medical cure, and she has a GoFundMe campaign. He was fishing and fishing for me to contribute (which I will not), saying, "I can't believe some people won't give her SOMETHING! Anything! If everyone just gave $30....I'd feel guilty if I didn't do that."

Then after he stared like a puppy dog for a half hour at an opened bottle of red wine I had sitting on my counter , I asked him if he wanted a glass and he says, "You read my mind. I like to have a couple of glasses of wine so I don't have to take Tylenol PM to make me sleep."

But here's the kicker: Out of curiosity, I went on his friend's GoFundMe page, and.... HE DONATED $300 TO HER YESTERDAY!!!! The same day that I went to pay HIS property taxes because he can no longer afford them. (The house is half ours, so obviously I have a vested interest in paying them.)

$300 is at least 25% of his current living expenses for one month. So he whines about food and heat and he gives away $300???

I'm venting here because I won't tell DH. He'll go nuts. Maybe I will later, but I'm keeping my mouth shut for now. Thanks for listening.

"God bless the child that's got his own."

Arghh...

Ah, catherine. Your BIL's money is his money, and also YOUR money is his money. You are the great and givIng mom, In his mind, anyway.

I was wondering about you taking the action, or inaction, of simply not paying the real estate taxes. How would that affect your bil's attitude? I don't know what will keep you from being exactly in this same place a year from now on December 31,2017.

While it sounds risky, it takes years for a property to get to the stage of a tax sale, here in my city anyway. At any point you can swoop in and pay the taxes, and penalties (which are minimal here) and get your property back. Sure, in the real world it is not something I would do because it is just too scary, but I know several people who pay their taxes a year after they are due. I look up property on on our city assessor's database and see these things.

I know. I'm 11 years older, so he probably does see me as an extension of his mother. And she was such an enabler. I used to ask her, "why don't you make I.. pay SOMETHING toward food or heat?" (He would spend tons of money on food at high-end supermarkets and put it on her credit card). And she would say, "But I'd be spending the money anyway, if he weren't here." They had a symbiotic relationship--they each needed each other in their own way, so I think she "paid" him to be her companion in a way. But I knew her treating him as a perennial child would end badly, and it has.

However, I have enough children to care for, and they take FAR less caring for than this man-child.

To your point, IL, I will probably drag my feet on the next two quarters of property taxes. HOPEFULLY by then the house will be sold.

If I'm in the same place December 31, 2017, shoot me.

After a lot of kicking and screaming, I have been going back to Al-anon and it is really helping me with boundaries and this kind of family situation. I didn't really want to go but I am hearing things there that are really helping me to figure out what my part in a situation is/should be--what I want to contribute to a situation and what I don't. Catherine, at least he gave money to a person he cares about for a medical reason, even though they are probably being scammed. When we were helping keep DBIL afloat, he bought a young woman who was living in to take care of his daughters a $300 Siamese cat. He could have gotten a free kitten of any sort, but no... had to be a purebred. While they were being evicted, and had little money for food. The young woman moved on with her boyfriend, DBIL and kids ended up in a hotel room, and the cat ended up feral. ARG!! FINALLY, DH has cut DBIL out of our financial picture. TG!

my dad is in the hospital because he keeps falling and various other ailments that all present the same way as when he got diagnosed with a rare mitochondrial disease. Back then he saw a geneticist, got the meds he needed and he was back to his normal self. Fast forward 10 yrs, there's no adult geneticist in town for what he has so his primary prescribes the meds. I truly think he is having a relapse and needs to have the meds increased. Every other time this has happened, he needed a med adjustment and he would improve in less than 24 hrs, back to his normal self. So his primary prescribes the meds reluctantly because someone has to. No one in the hospital will call the primary to get an order to increase the meds because he does not go to that hospital. I tried calling, he won't even call them and explain the possible situation. He got there Thurs, no PT/OT until Tues, then they plan to ship him to rehab without finding out the reason why he keeps falling, unbelievable. Sooooooooo frustrated.

Ow! After being away from a commercial kitchen for six months, I apparently forgot how to handle a chef's knife safely and ended up literally slicing off the top of my left thumb. It is ugly and it took forever to stop bleeding. I didn't think stitches would work because there is no flap to close up...antibiotic creme and lots of band aids...

Have you recieved any professional medical care? You're right that stitches won't work -fingertips are almost never stitched, but you may need more serious disinfectant and possibly a sterile pressure dressing.

Medicare denied my dad inpatient rehab. I spent the day taking him to the doctor's. He is a shadow of his former self, can barely walk, in a ton of pain. His primary is very good, he was strict with my dad about a couple of things he has slacked off on but said, "I don't want you to be resigned to this. If you follow our plan, you should get better." I think my dad really needed to hear that. I guess this isn't a rant although he really belongs in inpatient rehab. He's been home a while and no home PT/OT yet, grrr.

Today: Got a bill from dentist that is more complicated than an IRS bill. After getting mad and studying it, they did not input the $$ amount of my VISA payment. They made a note but did not input the amount. VISA has the approved payment on my account. Sent email to sort out because, of course, the office is closed for the day.

Then the dishwasher broke. Thankfully no water on floor. So hubby is going to waste a half day and loads of $$ to replace.

Then it started to rain on us on the walk to our dinner restaurant over a mile away. No umbrellas. Had frozen meal at home.

Then I got another robo call about a complimentary service from the local hospital to "help me with my medical bills" regarding an account that was always fully paid. This makes 3 or 4 calls over an erroneous bill. And I HATE robo calls. Another hot email to the hospital that had 3 employees call and assure me the bill was totally erroneous and resolved.

Tomorrow has to be better.

yes I hear you, I think when you come across as caring it means that you don't need anything. However I try to build mutually supportive deals I am not very good at, and I think people in general want to put us in a caretaker role or a needy person role instead of a real human role.

I really am mad at one of our parents, I am going to lose my mind. She is so sure her child is being bullied all the time, so she complained about him being in a group with another kid who has serious issues during the day. We do not have the same issues after school so I do not respond to things not happening. Today she came in and wondered if the groups had been changed and wondered why not and told my staff "I don't blame you that was Ms. Zoe Girl's job", yeah, I knew the other kid was not attending today and it was my staff's last day so I didn't change the groupings because it didn't matter. And now she says another kid is telling him mean things that none of us have ever heard, so he shouldn't be with her. He is going to be a 2nd grader with preschool and kindergarten kids all based on imaginary bullying.

We have been plagued with groups of young teens robbIng, pointing guns, actually shooting someone with a small pellet gun, and etc.

When our neighborhood cracked down and really became active to combat it with citizen patrols and special meetings with cops and juvenile justice personnel, we learned how difficult it is to "do" something about badly behaved juveniles. The arrest process is cumbersome and it takes much time, and cops are off the street while they attend to the young perps. And then, when (if) they get into the system there are more hoops to jump through and all kinds of protections for them.

The juvenile justice system is just different from the other.

Our neighborhood's strongest tool has been to boot these kids' families out of public housing. We have to put pressure on the often useless public hous Ng management system to boot them, but it does happen. Their own rules call for that to happen. It is always a joy to make gubmnt institutions follow their own damn rules.

Indy is having a similiar problem. The latest story in the paper was about a teenage girl who was one actually shot with nonlethal rounds to get them to stop fighting. She admits she did not listen to the officers. At one point a shot was fired by one of the teenagers. We are having fights downtown on an almost nightly basis.

The teenager was arrested but even she said if they are released to their parents, nothing happens.

The saddest happening was when a 14 year old was killed by the security guard he tried to rob while holding a gun. The 29 year old with the 14 year old apparently gave him the gun due to lower chances of juvenile punishment by the courts.

My peeve for the day. So they advertise all these hands free devices as being good for the driver. I agree, ToomuchStuff. I have a friend who would sometimes call me on her car phone if she was stuck somewhere on the roadway and just wanted to chat to pass the time. Not a good idea - too much road noise, static, or 'hold on a second I have to change lanes' etc. To me those devices are only good for a quick "I'm on my way" type call, not anything that's going to take longer than a minute or so.

Staying at DD/SIL's for 2 weeks while they dawdle and play in St. Maarten. The kids are a dream, responsibly doing chores, homework, not fighting. But the DOGS--OMG! I just want to throttle one of them. They (the adult humans in the home) do not train them at all. They are constantly milling around underfoot while you are trying to make dinner. They try to lick the plates in the dishwasher while you are loading it (so apparently that's ok with adult children) AND I clean up at least 2 messes a day from the teenage dog! He can have just come in from outdoors and he'll pee a bucket-ful on the kitchen floor!!!!!! Aaaaaghhhhh!

My new staff is struggling but we had a long team meeting that helped a lot. However we have a kid with a challenging past of abuse and trauma. I was told his behavior concerns on day one since I talk to the psychologist all the time. So we have concerns, plans, supports. So staff freaks out and calls her coworker last night saying she thinks this 8 year old is going to bring a gun to school and kill her. OMG, In our meeting she didn't tell me this but she did say she was concerned because she didn't think we were doing anything. Doh! My staff caught the first signs of him appearing stressed, called me over, I took him with me and gave him space to play math dice games and he was fine. My primary staff and I have been doing this a long time, one kid we worked with over 4 years through a lot of ups and downs. Another I expelled after a lot of work. I had also forgotten that you need prior permission - Yes, even if you are painting it the same color! but the latest news is "all's well that ends well" because my SO went into the HOA office today and got them to agree that our current color is the equivalent of a color scheme that's already approved, so we are good to go once we turn in the form on Monday.

and yes, I am wary of getting into a fight with my HOA because a) they do have the regulations on their side and b) they will fine you and put a lien on your house which will have to be paid if you ever want to sell it. In the grand scheme of things this is not a big deal but it is annoying.

My plant society that is dying has a person, no make that two or three people, who seem to be obsessed with physical objects. One of them rounded up the old "library" of books about our plants. The library was in the hands of someone who quit our group years ago and she had been trying to get someone to come and take it. So, the savior of the library is so pleased with herself and is now presenting it as a problem I have to solve, what do we do with the library? I told her you – –you! -- May do whatever you like with it. We brainstormed a couple of ideas but her desire that it be preserved and handed off to an entity in entirety is utterly unrealistic. The " library" is just a bunch of society quarterlies and a handful of books, it is not an important collection.

Then there are the carvings. Someone, long dead, liked to carve and gave away several carvings of our flower. Now those carvings are ending up in my house. There is another one
I am expected to drive across town to fetch. At least these may have a chance of disappearing at the auction of our convention.

There are other mundane things we spend ridiculous amounts of time talking about. Ugh. Our organization will be disbanded by December 1, I keep telling me self only 7 more months.

You have become the "somebody" or "someone" that needs to do this thing, or fix the problem and on and one. I am seeing it more and more all around me.

It is annoying for sure. But then it dawns on me--these people are actually incapable of dealing with the "stuff " which is why we have so much of it. So I guess I am happy that I am whole, hardy, and capable of making things happen.

We have not lately been graced with the presence of the person who vaguely promises to present ideas of saving our plant society. I told her last summer that we would need to have a concrete plan from her for the Board to consider by November 2016. Didn't happen. I am quite certain that should she reappear she will share with us all of her sadz about disbanding our organization and plead "can't something be done???!!!" Meanwhile some of us have actually been doing some things.

Did you add the word librarian at the end of that sentence?

Every few months this same man, young enough to be my son, tries to hit on me and any other woman he sees in the grocery store. He is not there on a regular basis. His line is always, "I like your hair." He has struck me as somewhat developmentally disabled so I have just tried to ignore him but today he snuck up behind me when I was in the checkout line and when I did not respond mumbled, "Bitch" at me then quickly walked away. This creeped me out.

My pet peeve lately: My office is probably 80% Millennials. I do like them..very much for the most part. But they have a very annoying habit---every one of them---of starting all their conversations with, "So... blah, blah, blah." It's almost as annoying as the ubiquitous "like." It seems like a prelude to every sentence or thought, as if they need that crutch to begin to articulate their thought. Or they're just being cool. I dunno.

Do people do that in your worlds?

There is a deer in our city park one block away from my house.

I swear, if this creature eats my lilies, this year of the national lily conventin here, I will--I dont know. might as well get a place in the country then, or in suburbia on the edge and have 1plus acres on one parcel. The ONE thing I am safe from here is deer. I put up with gunshots and car cloutings and other crime from the two legged variety of criminal in order to be free of the big 4 legged variety.

Deer, I hear you. Few neighbors feed them here, I tell these kind hearted people that they are feeding someones dinner come fall. And this keeps the herd in our neighborhood to graze on my gardens!

Aaarg!

dh hit a cut in the road last night and split both front tires. He is fine, so I am trying to just be grateful for that, but now we have a huge bill for tow, new tires, and rental car. In the quarter when he has a temporary pay cut, my job is ending for the summer (which we planned on, but it means no chance of picks up extra for subbing for a while) and our dd is coming home to live so added food and electric.

Also, the brakes went out on my car (the plan is that this car is supposed to last me at least another year until we get dd2 out if school) so I am driving the bad gas milage farm truck until dh can fix them.

this is probably going to delay the dry walling of the addition significantly.

There should be a better tire. Years ago one was advertised driving over spikes and resealing itself but somehow that never seemed to come to fruition in real life.

Had to contact Verizon 4 times and spend over 2 hours to get a simple replacement remote control. The people in their offshored call centers are in way over their heads, so I resorted to social media, which got me Americans in departments that refused to talk to each other. And this is supposedly a communications company! This is a good case of the things I own owning me.

Time for a rant. I have two today.

shopping: ugh, I dont want to answer a shit ton of questions at time of purchase. Just take my money and shut up. No I dont want a rewards card. No, I do not want to give you my freekin email address. Stop asking me how
I want my receipt, give it to me in paper because how can you email it to me, I didnt give you my email address???

stuff more stuff the stuff rolls in associated with garden clubs: As a "thank you" for a judging assignment i received a gift bag with the ubiquitous candle plus some lotion plus some lavender cream. More little thingamajigs to use up. Then another thank you bag came, with another set of small thinamajigs. Then I learned that each of us will receive a mixed tape (actually, a CD) from a flower show, an audio track of music played at the show. Ummm. I dont want this.No one asked if I wanted one. Someoneis burning these, someone is using precious life energy to make this crap. No, just cut it out. If I want music I will buy it, and why does anyone think their compilation is a set I would want?

ugh. I love my flower show peeps and I love the creative work we do in having shows and setting up designs for critique. But I do not want the attendant CRAP!

And then we had a meeting about another flower event and we had quite a long discussion, during which I got crabbier and crabbier, about keeping people hydrated while they toured the Botanical gardens. The person in charge of the tour planned to buy water in Plastic bottles and keep them in a cooler on the bus. Ok, whatever, Eye roll. But then a person who is the ultimate consumer said that we should buy permenant water bottles with our logo, would be great because then "you can recycle it and use it again..." and on and on. Yes, buying more cheap crap from China is exactly what we should be doing to litter the earth and force attendees to take home yet another stupid thing they dont want. At our meeting I made her take the three tote bags We had received at the previous flower show event. She wants bags! Well, she will get them from me,
I hate them.

tl;dr Iris hates useless objects foisted on her!

I gained a lot of wt when I got sick. well, first I lost 70 lbs in 2 mos but quickly gained that and more back. I am limited in exercising to 5 min spurts on a reclining bike. 5 mins seems so little, I don't bother, but if I did it 6 times that would be 30 mins of exercise. I eat way too many carbs, I hate to cook. I've tried to cut back and keep failing. So today I had it, I have to change. I'm going to do slim fast because I have 3 cans of it in the house. But I also got an email from Good Rx that talked about drugs that work for more than one thing. There was a drug listed for wt loss. I saw my doctor and we're going to try it. I'm also now diabetic with an A1c of 6.1. My dad is a brittle diabetic, I don't want to go down that path. I'm angry at myself for wanting a wt loss drug but I'm going to try it.

With all your healthh problems and the limitations of your lifestyle (elderly parents) I applaud you getting whatever help you need in the form of a pill.

Your limitation in exercise is pretty tough for a weight loss regime. So, I hope this works!

i know that I cant lose weight without stepping up exercise.

I've seen it reported that exercise is only 20% of weight loss. Gary Taubes thinks it only makes one hungry. It's good for muscle-building and/or cardiovascular health, but not really necessary to lose weight. As far as diabetes goes, Dr. Richard K Bernstein wrote the book on that. Good luck!

Oh, I know one doesn't burn that many calories just from a bit of daily exercise, but I think it probably pushes my metabolism to work a little harder overall. Plus, I feel much better which leads to eating the right things. It's more of a psychological boost than a physiological boost for me.

Yeah--I'm all for exercise, even though I don't do any. It's always nice to get some fresh air and make some vitamin D.

Here it is, another rant about my hobby group. This is a rant, no need to respond, it is just a rant. And it is a first world problem, ha ha.

My plant society is closing down, we have properties that I need to dispose of responsibly. Included in that stuff are 12 tubs of equipment used in shows. The group who is giving next year's national show said they wanted our extra equipment. That is fine they are in a neighboring state. We are very fortunate that DH drives to that state a few times a year AND he has a truck. Winner! The key person to accept the stuff lives only 40 minutes out of his way.

Only guess what, she will not take the stuff, she does not have room for 12 tubs of equipment. So she wants to send him off to a storage place that is three hours from where she lives. Once again, we are incredibly fortunate because that happens to be the direction that he will turn to and this new place is only about 40 minutes off his route. Winner!

but--the guy who is in charge of the storage wont return phone calls and he will not return emails. DH is in that other state driving around with all of this plant society equipment in his truck.

This is a prime example of why these volunteer organizations that disrespect the time of their volunteers need to die.

P.s. Dont tell Chicken Lady, but I have plans to burn 2-4 tubs of solid oak sign holders and bases. Oak is great firewood. No one uses these things anymore, they weigh a ton. Everyone uses table tent signage, easy to transport.when 80% of people in your garden club or plant society are unable to bend and lift 40 lbs, it is timeto become realistic about your equipment.

There is a positive to everything. My garden club ladies want some of this equipment, and I aim to give it to them.

Since the sister plant society is crapping out, anything that comes back here to St. Louis will be disbursed to gardening people but not nevessarily to those who grow our plant.

My fellow club officer and the only person on our board who is a capable person, says she suspected this debacle could happen, and she is fully supportive of giving equipment to other garden clubs.

Speaking of annoying elocutions, there's another one I've heard--mainly from younger people--where words are extended and emphasized thus: "Anduh nowww itsuh time forrr anotheruh song.." It's hard to characterize, but you'd know it if you heard it. It's even showing up in commercials, much to my dismay.

Starting stand-alone thoughts with "so" is common now and becoming more so, along with "different to," which I first thought was a regionalism, and "how" for "the way." Language changes, not always for the better.

How the heck are you supposed to dress yourself when your waist/hip area is a size 12 but your butt and thighs are more like a size 6? I just decided to see what I look like from behind while wearing what I though was a decent-looking and comfortable pair of cut-off shorts...ugh....skinny stick legs floating around inside a column of denim and a saggy seat area, yet tight around my waistband.

I honestly have no idea how to dress my aging, menopausal figure...dang, and I used to look pretty hot!

That's why my daily outfit is yoga pants. If I were in the Southwest, I'd probably switch to simple cotton dresses. One year there was a sale at Bass and I bought 3 of the exact same dress: like a polo shirt with a collar and short sleeves, only a dress. It was a great comfortable, casual look. Wore a different color every day.

As you can see, I tend to go for "uniforms." I don't like making decisions about what I'm going to wear every day. No wonder I wanted to be a nun when I was young--the kind with the habits.

Being out here in a hippy desert town my uniform IS denim cut-offs. I just had no idea that this particular pair (originally Ralph Lauren jeans that I got at the thrift store for a couple of bucks and cut off myself) looked so lousy. The thrift store doesn't have three way mirrors so I never really looked at myself from behind! I just wish some of the new fat around my waist and hips would migrate downward and fill out the seat of my pants.

I might break down this week and get some new shorts on sale at Kohl's or something. I have some coupons to use. My body has really changed this year being away from the Wholefoods job and drinking way more booze than I used to. I've packed on a few extra pounds and it doesn't look that bad, it's more like I am just not used to it. I think it is going to be my new normal, unfortunately, unless I get the same kind of job that had me running around all day long like a crazy person.

Biking, another way to look at it is the young men who work for the painter --did they do the bad paint job? Did he tell them to do it that way?
If he did, they are better off getting another employer and learning not to do things wrong.
If they did it, then they can learn from what they did and get another job.
I would certainly not take on that kind of guilt.

I am seeing why Trump voters dislike offshoring and immigration. For an upcoming trip my son and I tried to find out if the motel includes HBO. We have spoken with 5 different people and still don't know. These folks - at the hotel and apparently fresh off the boat, and at call centers in the Philippines - either have never heard of HBO or don't know and refer me to someone else who doesn't know. Surely there must be some unemployed Americans we could train to do these jobs?

I would not expect much better from unemployed Americans in these jobs. Someones (likely employed Americans) have either hired incurious people with no ability to find answers to their (your) questions (the failure of the hirer, not the hired) or failed to provide adequate information so these people can do their jobs (not in their knowledgebase or computer) or has scoped the job of call-takers so tightly that there is no room for that kind of exploration ("Close the call!"). None of these issues goes away by hiring unemployed Americans.
