Then double down on the weight loss plans. Diabetes is 100% genetic* and made more likely to occur and much worse to deal with by being overweight, eating too many carbs, etc. My mother was able to not take drugs for it for the first six or seven years she had it by being really vigilant with her diet and getting regular exercise, walking 2-3 miles/day.

*My maternal grandmother had it (and was blind the last 30 years of her life because of it) Five out of eight kids in my mom's generation had it. About half of my maternal cousins currently have it. My sister and I, being two of the three youngest in our generation still don't have it, but it won't be a surprise if either, or both, of us get it. With the exception of a couple of my cousins' kids who already have it everyone who has gotten it in our family did so between the ages of 55-65.
