    Update on the maple trees.

So, DH left to go pick up a call-in order this afternoon. He passed our neighbor. I love DH--he just got out of his truck, and said, "Hey, M___! What's up with the trees?" I could never have gotten away with that without sounding like a Gladys Cravitz.

So he explained that they were, in fact, all diseased. He planted those trees himself 31 years ago. He called the University of Vermont to see if he could save them, but they were beyond saving, and he told DH "It's breaking my heart."

But he's already bought 20 replacement trees and he's planting them next year. He's 70 years old. He'll be lucky to see them mature. All of a sudden I love this guy.

    Lesson learned: never judge.

I am trying to picture the foresters rushing out to moon the offending tree.

Funny end to the story but also good to hear that he was well motivated and careful of the trees. Odd that maple trees unless they are silver maples would all die at the same time at 30 years of age. Silver maples don't have a long lifespan.

I had volunteer silver maples at my NJ house, so I'm familiar with the differences in their leaves, but I'm no means an expert. Maybe his were Silver maples, but I didn't think so. They looked fine to me.

BTW, IL, you are using a politically incorrect word: You should say "Silver maples are longevity-challenged" "Junky" is SO pejorative and speciesist.

UL, interesting that you said fruit trees don’t live a long time. We bought our house 8 years ago with 3 mature fruit trees.
