We laughed because we know him pretty well and so we gave him dinner on cue. We grilled steaks, fried potatoes, made a salad from mostly garden greens. And broccoli fresh broccoli from the garden.
That is a sign of GREAT hosts. I aspire to be the person who can whip up a great meal at the drop of a hat for guests.

When we went to Minneapolis for the weekend for our nephew's wedding, we were going to go out for dinner the next night with my brother and SIL. But, being that it was Jan 2 in Minneapolis, it was snowing and freezing. So last minute we decided to eat at their place. They grabbed a couple of filet mignon from their freezer and put together something similar to what you did (minus the garden-fresh veggies) and it was great and seemingly effortless on their part.

I would have freaked out and suggested pizza--delivered of course.
