Say No with a big smile. Or, “Sorry, no.”
It depends on what you're saying no to. You need slightly different graceful ways of saying no to an invitation vs no to a gift vs no to a request for you to contribute/volunteer vs a coworker wanting you to do part of their job or help them vs....
It also depends on the personality of the person you're saying no to. Some people will get upset no matter how polite you are, and others you have to hit them over the head with a chair before they get the message that you really do mean no.
Yes Sorry is (was) my go to word alsothat is something I have worked on greatly in the last year. I said I was sorry to my dad's roommate who had a stroke at the nursing home last year(pre-covid), He responded with Don't say you're sorry, it was not your fault.
Both Yes and Sorry must surely say something about my personality! Note to self.
