    Hunh, i didnt know.

we had a field or two of big sunflowers over the years here in my city as well. They’re worth visiting because they’re so cheery. And then we have a volunteer clumps at Highway access and entrances, those get no care at all and seem to do OK. But they’re not the big Russian sunflowers, they seed themselves so they break down to a species pretty quickly.

I have picked and eaten volunteer sunflowers that sprouted beneath a bird feeder. They have a strong nutty flavor. In the past I have enjoyed them mixed up in a green salad. I think I would like them chopped with fresh parsley and chives in an omelet... that's on my bucket list.

The Mammoth variety is a gray and black seed, whereas my bird feeder seeds were all black.

Today I started one 5.5g packet of sunflower seeds. I was pleasantly surprised that after removing one small red rock, I soaked and planted 73 seeds.

Now, germination is a gamble, as the sunflower seeds were harvested in the late summer of 2000 to be sold by Sept 2021. But compared to the risk/reward odds that are available in casinos and with lottery tickets... If nothing grows, my loss is the time I put into the project, and some peat pots, and some potting soil... which pots had already been host to marigold seeds that have not sprouted.

Asparagus 99 cents a pound at Giant Eagle Tasted FRESH! We grow asparagus and if I didn't know it was purchased, I'd have thought it was ours!!! Did cut off most of the stalk.

Went to both Aldi's and regular grocery store today. Still expensive, but I think it would have been way more if I had just gone to the regular grocery store. I'm seeing some decent prices on sale items (i.e. 5 lb bag russet potatoes for .99), but for the most part, prices have NOT gone down by me.

Still spotty and expensive. We had a cookout today at work though and free snacks continue.

I found ingredients for 3 of the 4 recipes I wanted to try from The Frugal Vegan.

I switched from coffee to tea which is cheaper but today there were no unsweetened big containers of tea.

Today (5/1/22) I picked the first 6 of the sunflower micro greens, growing in peat pots on my sunporch.

I used herb scissors to cut the stems into short uniform lengths. The sunflower bits will be added to 2 salads comprised of store-bought ingredients, and the salad dressing will be Italian-style w/romano cheese & a little garlic.

Went to Walmart to buy a Mother's Day gift and picked up a few things. They had bamboo, but only in a small can.

Prices were high like everywhere else. The corn on the cob that was on sale was sold out.

Some things I'd resigned myself to a higher price on went up again so I just refused to buy them. For example, tofu was .99, last week 1.29, this week 1.79.

Still cannot find some things like frozen lima beans. May try yet another store next week.
