My landline bill seems to go up even faster than inflation. The cost of a landline may seem ridiculous to some and there are few others such as myself that consider the cost of cell phones and service ridiculous. I'm keeping my landline but have my in expensive Tracfone for times away from home when it's needed. It seems like you can pay big money for one or the other, but both doesn't make sense. I think a lot of people would find that a Tracfone type service covers most of a persons basic needs. I use an iPad or laptop at home which seems far more convenient than looking at or typing on a small cell phone and other than the maps feature on cell phones I don't use much data on my phone. But I suspect I'm in the minority when it comes to cell phone use.

I have a Tracfone Samsung A20. Other people I know are very happy with iPhones and Consumer Cellular.

Frugal, we use Total Wireless and one of us has a Samsung and one an LG. It's been pretty budget friendly. We could do a two person plan for 60/month, but we like having our own, 35 a month. You can order the phones online and they send them to your house and it is very easy to set up.

I was using Tracfone Smartphone but now has spots where it does not work…. places I routinely go. It tells me to call collect. WTH. It no longer is of value IMO. I recently was 1 mile from home and couldn’t call there. I, too, use my Ipad and laptop using home WIFI and also have MagicJack for calls. Just got the landline bill for $40/month. At this point it makes more sense to get a regular cell phone. YLMV

I am going to check this out. I was told WalMart will help set up as well?? Our TX landlord uses there and also in WI with good results.

Soon, we are giving up the landline here, and while it is seldom used, I do like it for voice communications.

But I’m not going to carry mine around much more than I do now which is seldom. I DO find it indispensable for GPS guidance, tho.Even tho it dumped me off on a T in downtown Madison, WI recently with no further instruction (turn right? Turn left? I got SILENCE.) Madison is …crazy with the windy streets that confused even GPS.

And then in the fall I will have to get an updated IPhone because support for mine is ending. Fortunately, DH went through that already, and I’ll get the same model he got which is not very recent.

    Which model was this?

Went through this don't know how many years back (posted about it here, then). Landline is more then 50% taxes, and you can no longer even get them. (they are not replacing the copper, not as good as service)
So when I needed a new cell phone for work, I kept my old phone number from my first cell (last bill was $40 a year), and transferred it to an OOMA service at around $7 a month. That way I didn't have to update all the emergency contact numbers. IMHO, voip service is probably 70% as good as landline. Unfortunately, they are designed more to work with wireless phones. (hate seeing all the wasted landline jacks around the house)

Yes, Walmart carries Total and will help with set up.

This is their website; the last 2 phones I have purchased I have bought from the website. Service is fine, and I have also returned phones with no problem.

I have prepaid cell phone for 15/month flat fee from T-Mobile. Unlimited talk and text with 3gb of data which is more than I use.
