I have an accordion door to my guest bedroom. My house had an addition in the 1960's and there is no room for a traditional door to open either in or out. It works just fine and was a perfect solution to the available space. I imagine there are a variety of materials to choose from. Mine is a heavier plastic with a wood finish which matches the home's character.
If I had the patience to deal with a big construction project I'd open up the wall separating my kitchen to the dining area.

our architect planned for pocket doors in a couple places, but our builder talked us out of them, and that’s OK. I know they can be a pain to maintain.
The giant 1880s pocket doors in my old neighborhood were wonderful often but were troublesome to operate .When we bought our house it had only 1 rwmaining original pocket door. I don’t know where the other one went.
We knocked down that wall anyway so I guess we did “open concept “back in 1990 before it was popular, ha ha. But you have to realize our Victorian house was rather small so opening up the dining area to the living area was a good thing.

We don't have many interior doors in our small house, which can be a challenge if we need to isolate or separate cats on occasion. However, we do have distinct rooms with doorways, and that serves us well since I often prefer to read quietly and DH prefers video and/or music.
I don't think anyone mentioned this but we do shut off rooms so we don't have to heat them, and it does make a difference.

Wouldn't a "barn door" be easier to install and maintain than a pocket door? I love those sliding barn style doors.

Barn doors: nooooooo!!! For these reasons:
1. They do not shut out sound
2. they are a decorating trend that has passed
3. They are fine…in a barn
But yes, they are much easier to install than a pocket door.
Speaking of design trends that may be over, I was reading a couple of articles that said that vintage furniture is on trend because it speaks to sustainability. I think that's kind of funny. I know most of us have used old second-hand stuff in our homes for years for frugality reasons. Now it's trending for green reasons. Whatever works, I guess.

I troll Facebook for used furniture, specific things I’m looking for, because I just like older solid pieces. Effective life is that we have a truck, a furniture, dolly, and a husband who is willing to drive places to pick up stuff.
I’m pretty much done with the large pieces of furniture though and now I’m just looking for smaller pieces that could fit into my SUV.
