I agree that traditional sleeper sofas are usually very uncomfortable.

We used to have a sofa that had very comfortable cushions, and loose back cushions, so they could be removed. When they were removed, the sofa was wide to sleep on and it was very comfortable. My dog especially loved it, but it was suitable for humans, trust me.

Here is a sofa my daughter bought for a spare room she has on a floor that separates her from the rest of the family (3 y.o. son and her dh). She fixed this room up as her "resting room" for when she needs peace and quiet to recover from chemo. The sofa she chose was this one, and it's really comfortable, although I'm guessing it's not your style. But it is versatile and cheap and very easy to turn into a bed.
