I related to Josh in many ways.
I had started that episode of Ramit show but couldn’t get into the couple so I skipped it. I may go back and watch it now that you pointed this out. I’m reading the comments and they are extremely positive towards this man and his wife.

Ramit did talk about societal systems that support financial success and how hard it is to make it when they are absent, it doesn’t matter how hard you work. Sure I agree with that.

And yesterday Ramit treated us to another sociology lecture about kids who grow up in neighborhoods where there are very few men and they see so many of their friends killed or relatives dead at early age, and how that affects their “live for today with money” mindset.

The couple on yesterday are tragically unprepared for retirement. The woman cried at the drop of a hat at any negativity. She said near the end of the program she couldn’t stay home alone with her partner’s 14 year-old daughter for him to go out and get a job in the evenings. I think she’s ridiculous. Ramit seemed to ignore the importance of parenting the teenage girl as he offered solutions to their financial woes.

The man was handsome and had a smooth demeanor. He is earning good money for someone who had such a rocky underprivileged childhood but they live in Washington DC so things are expensive there. Their household income is $163,000 and they have more than $300,000 in student loans. The man is 57 years old and has $180,000 in student loans.

that caused me to look up some information about student loans and I will post that on another thread.

But then later in the episode after delivering this lecture about growing up in poverty, Ramit went off on a rant to this couple about how immigrants come here and work hard and sacrifice to earn wealth and stay out of debt. he was trying to convince him that they needed to bring in more money.

    it was an odd episode.

Hmm.. I'll have to watch that one. I always am so grateful that I never had student loans, and even if I had they would have been a fraction of what people sign up for today. I don't know how they think they're going to pay them off! Something has to change on that front.

Trump's recent attention to Venezuela is slightly mysterious. Mainstream news says they are neither a source of Fentanyl headed for the US and they are not sending criminals from their prisons to the US, as he claims for justification. They do have a lot of oil or other political motivations.

It looks to me like we may be about to go to war with Venezuela.

OMG. Well, fentanyl is definitely the red herring here. But what could the US interest there be?

And then there's the business with Argentina. https://substack.com/inbox/post/176358237

Trump & Co. are drunk on their own power at this point. Maybe he's aiming to take over the Americas and leave the East to its own devices. Build Big Beautiful Walls from north to south in the Pacific and Atlantic.

It sounds like even the GOP is concerned about the lack of information and evidence. Of course they are spineless. The B-52s flying over the coast is concerning, but I suspect it's all another Trump bluff. The only thing I can figure is that he wants a change in regimes. Seems like the CIA has a history of influencing such things in Latin America.

okay----it's about time we teach those sleazy countries in SA whose countries are based on exports of illicit drugs a lesson. If bombing them into submission is what it takes, so be it. While we're at it, resume the draft, and conscript these irresponsible rabble-rousers from urban centers who think they have nothing better to do than wage turf wars. This'll help them get it out of their system, after they've parachuted into the jungles on a mission for Uncle Sam. Yup. In your Heart, you know I'm right.

No Kings Day, Orcas Island WA

Peak crowd was considerably larger than this, and it was 49F and raining quite a bit at times. Format was open-mic at the Village Green, speakers went on for ~2 hours.

Over-18 population of the island is about 4000 people. I counted, before the peak, 225 people in the crowd and then lost count as folks started milling around, and more arrived. So, 5%+ of our adult population, probably more. Several other people got a peak count of ~400 people, but it was really hard to get a good count because of the heavy rain and people coming/going.

On San Juan Island next door, the crowd by the courthouse was ~1000 people out of an adult population of about 6500 people. 15% of the adult population, again in the rain. Parking and transportation is much easier there than our village green area here.
