Megyn likened CBS News to a giant freighter on the ocean, heading towards icebergs, and they install Bari at the wheel as though she can actually steer it away from the big threats.

I think a better fit for Bari would’ve been NPR news division. That is small enough that I influentialI can see her making some real changes there while being influential enough to get her attention and interest.

The more I think about it, more I think it’s a mismatch and I wonder if CBS new ownership has thrown Bari into this mess as a temporary chaos agent where she will not last long. Ya gotta start the chaos if you are really going to shake up deeply entrenched employees and culture.
I think you may be right. This is the organization that mobilized its “race and culture unit” against a reporter who had the temerity to question Ta-Nehisi Coates. This is the organization that edited a Kamala Harris interview to make her appear coherent. There’s a lot of ideological inertia there to overcome.

I remember Dan Rather’s Memogate fiasco where he claimed to have documents proving GW Bush’s dishonesty with military service. I distinctly remember that incident because that was the first time it sunk in for me the power of the Internet, where thousands of little busy bees do their “investigative reporting.” And while 99% of it is noise and misinformation, the 1% percent that’s true is put out there. I remember going down the rabbit hole of experts on old typewriters who argued that memo could not be what it was represented to be because typewriters didn’t produce those characters in the year it was claimed to originate.

Someone besides Dan Rather took the fall for that though. As Brightstar Cruise Line from
Television’s Succession would say, “NRPI” No Real People Involved to be hurt, just flunkies.

As for the more recent editing of Kamila’s interview, I followed Megyn Kelly’s analysis of it and did not come to the same agreement she came to. necessarily. I am neutral on it and think the opposition to CBS didn’t prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt,

Looks like CBS News Division continues its deceptive editing practices to promote its favorite narratives. Only the shoe is on the other foot, and Bari Weiss is now promoting her favorite narrative which is “ Israel good always good.”

A recent interview on 60 Minutes with Pete Hegseth has deception. His answer to a question was not edited. The question posed to him was entirely different than what we are shown during the 60 Minutes broadcast.

Original question paraphrased: “Key conservatives like Tucker Carlson, megyn Kelly, and candace Owens are not happy with this Iran war and they think this war is not putting America first. Comment?”

Hegseth’s answer paraphrased: “President Trump puts America first!, always!”

Question we saw on air, paraphrased: “ It appears Israel pushed America into this war. Comment?”

Hegseth’s answer paraphrased: “ President Trump puts America first, always!”

So what is the point of this deception? Bari wants us to see that Hegseth is disavowing Israel’s influence in getting the US into this war. Hegseth wants to emphasize President Trump makes his own decisions, those that are the best for the United States.

Due to Donald Trump’s beef with CBS News and their past deceptive editing practices,
60 Minutes now puts the entire unedited footage of the interview that is accessible on their website. That’s how this discrepancy showed up.

I would like to know Bari’s response to this accusation of deception. Until I hear something sensible from her, I am no longer a fan. While I don’t expect news organizations to be “fair and balanced” because they’re all going to have a definite point of view, how they report their favorite hobby horse issues could be done —less dishonestly.

If fringy nutters like Tucker Carlson and Candace Owen are “key conservatives”, then I’m a Democratic Socialist.

Well, that phrase was mine, but it was those three names mentioned in the original question and they were probably characterized as MAGA supporters. Tucker and Candace have been off the Trump train for quite a while.

Speaking of media misrepresentation, I submit the recent bombing attack in NYC. A couple of young ISIS fans tossed (thankfully faulty) bombs into a crowd of anti-Muslim demonstrators outside the Mayor’s residence. This was widely referred to as an attack on the Mayor at first, followed by a wave of corrections from the more responsible outlets. CNN even did a smarmy human interest story about the impact on the lives of the junior terrorists; although it was later papered over after inspiring widespread laughter.

I especially liked the Babylon Bee headline worrying that the recent wave of giant spider attacks might inspire hateful arachnophobia.

I subscribed to the Free Press substack for a short while and I really could not see where it was any sort of break through in news reporting. I don't know if there is any news reporting that is not under pressure from the government for reporting, whether it is through direct or partisan financial control or frivolous legal threats. Or you get off into the weeds with Amy Goodman or Mother Jones, which should not be discounted too much. Maybe the WSJ is the closest to middle ground these days?

My current take is that anything that comes out of the White House or it's many tentacles needs to be fact checked in the least, if it is not the obvious lie.

I have pretty much abandoned American mainstream news sources at this point.

With the current president talking to and discussing taking away sanctions from Russia, it is apparent whose side he is on. Nothing from the White House can be trusted. I, too, have been watching news from elsewhere.
