Someone kicked in the man-door on our garage and took some power tools and a few hand tools.

This is only the second time in 32 years here we have had a break in, so that track record isn’t bad. And I have to say that in tiny safe Hermann, somebody broke into one of our sheds and took a power tool.

A difference between the two break-ins is that here in the city the police just call us back with a report number should we wish to file insurance claim, but of course we won’t do that. In Hermann, the police knew the perp Because I had already picked them up for similar crimes. They invited DH to come down to their evidence room/vehicle garage and pick up his power tool because they had it.

The worst thing was popped the hood of my little red car and tried to start it up but they were unable. They didn’t hurt the car and they didn’t figure out how to steal it so that’s good. That would’ve been tragic, I would’ve been so sad about that.

We have had many petty crimes though, crimes of opportunity some of them such as once I left the garage door open and someone darted in and took a power tool. We’ve had other things lifted from our yard, that’s a constant battle. And mail theft of course and etc. on the little things.

Moving boxes. I don't know why we have this stuff, why we moved it, why we are here, why any of it. Told myself one box a day, then two boxes a day, did four boxes yesterday and I am not really getting anywhere with it.

You are at a stressful time in your life, Tybee. Take a time out to be kind to yourself. Do something fun today. Plan something simple and fun for yourself every day. Moving is really hard work. Rebuilding a life and routine in a new community is challenging. Been there and done that a lot in my life. Hugs!!!

I have moved so many times and started over. I would focus on the motivation for moving which was to live by your kids and grandchildren. It’s a bonus living by your parents for as long as you have them. I like to unpack quickly so I can settle in. My sister is the opposite and does it slowly. Do whatever works for you. I had only one friend ask if I was moving back to my hometown. I never even considered it. Yes I would have 3 friends and my aunt and cousin but I left in 1993 so my life is here. Many move in retirement and make friends and a good life. Once the pandemic is over I would join some groups to meet people. I would certainly enjoy being your friend and many others will also.

Why is it that the ONLY time you get drop-in visits from people is when your house looks like an episode of hoarders and you look like a resident in a psych ward????

I am in the midst of an extremely busy time working--I've had to do 60 interviews in 4 weeks and I have two major report deadlines due, one this week and one next week. So I've let the chips fall where they may. DH cooks, but he's not good at clean up. DS usually takes care of the cans and paper recyclables but he left rather suddenly a couple of days ago and forgot to get the containers of recyclables out of the mudroom. Because of snow, I also had parked Christmas decorations and other items headed for the shed in the mudroom until the weather was nice enough for me to schlep the stuff out there.

Because I'm so focused on these reports, I never even changed out of my robe or brushed my teeth. So of course, at 12:30 today, I hear someone knocking on the door and getting themselves into the mudroom--my neighbors that I barely know. These are neighbors that stayed away for two years or so but this year they are experimenting with living here in the winter, like us.

They came to return a bag and a dishtowel to us--when I was away with DD last weekend, DH brought them some homemade bread and some pot edibles. Now they're going to think that all we do is sit around eating pot brownies.

I can have my house looking so cozy and pristine for months. I can be experiencing a great hair day and wearing a new outfit. I won't see a soul. Just let the household fall into chaos and that's when everyone stops by. If I had a dog, I KNOW it would have puked on the rug just before I opened the door. :(

Shame on them for dropping in without warning. I hope that you simply said, "thanks, but I am working and on a really tight schedule. When things slow down, I hope that we can connect. You must excuse me." That should cover any discomfort you feel about the mess around you.
People who drop in need to be given a boundary or they will come again because they are isolated this winter.

Forwarded spam emails. Conservative relatives are inundating my mother with this. She used to ignore these things but now that she is declining mentally she is forwarding these things on to other people, although the sentiments are ones she did not agree with when she was with it.

Example: A piece saying Donald Trump is like Thomas Jefferson

Example: A link to a 90 minute video about how someone was "saved from homosexuality, drugs, suicide, demon worship and a muslim faith" (yes, it did not capitalize Muslim)

Say No with a big smile. Or, “Sorry, no.”It depends on what you're saying no to. You need slightly different graceful ways of saying no to an invitation vs no to a gift vs no to a request for you to contribute/volunteer vs a coworker wanting you to do part of their job or help them vs....

It also depends on the personality of the person you're saying no to. Some people will get upset no matter how polite you are, and others you have to hit them over the head with a chair before they get the message that you really do mean no.

Yes Sorry is (was) my go to word also :( that is something I have worked on greatly in the last year. I said I was sorry to my dad's roommate who had a stroke at the nursing home last year(pre-covid), He responded with Don't say you're sorry, it was not your fault.

Both Yes and Sorry must surely say something about my personality! Note to self.

I still say "sorry"... not that it was my fault, but that I am sorry that it was/is something that the individual went through/endured. So I'm not sorry for saying sorry in instances like this.

I need to vent about a friend that is driving me crazy.

She's my age. Pays all her bills via check sent by mail. Absolutely refuses to even consider using online bill pay or direct debit automatic payments. Thinks everything is going to be hacked. She apparently mails all bills at the PO, but due to the ongoing PO issues, a lot of her bills have arrived late or not at all. Mortgage payment has even been late. I suggested she go to the local currency exchange (where you can pay bills in person, get license plate tags, etc.) and pay all her utility bills there. Cell phone bill could be paid at cell phone store. Mortgage payment would still have to go via mail if she didn't do an electronic payment. Nope, currency exchange charges fees and those are too expensive.

I finally told her that unless she was willing to make the changes to make sure her bills arrived on time, I didn't want to hear her bellyaching anymore. She went off in a huff and I've not heard from her since. :D

Oh well, she can get over it or die mad. She also needs to realize that if anyone gets ahold her of her checking account information, they can do quite a bit of damage with it, too. Checks aren't really that much safer than paying on-line.

We paid a visit to our Amish cabinet makers last week. The head guy there was lamenting the poor service from the post office. They do all their business by mail. Although they do have a very limited telephone system, their telephone is outdoors. They do nothing online.

This lack of reliable service is interfering with their business. Fortunately, they have tons of business they are backed up six months.

This is equally a Rant and a Rave.

Rave: Second technician came out this evening to inspect our new Lazyboy chair that does not work right. In 2 minutes he diagnosed two big missing screws that hold the base steady. 2 MINUTES. We have been trying to get Lazyboy to fix this since October.

Rant: First technician from same repair company told us it was not broken and was "just that way". I raised it to the BBB for the company selling something they did not deliver and got their attention. The repair company apparently sent a manager. Now we are going to get a package of parts and have the direct line to the company who will do the repair. Ends up being a manufacturing defect. Chair sent without quaility control and even without the remote.

Arggggg. Second technician said it was a good thing we kept at it.

Our mailman dropped mail in my yard without noticing. It was something for the second house down from me and something for the third house. This happened once before about 5 years ago so probably a different mailman, but it happening even once is too much.

It's bad enough that when mail gets delivered to the wrong house or the wrong street it often gets tossed in the trashcan because it doesn't look important to the person who received it, but the mailmen at least ought to be paying enough attention to not drop mail accidentally while walking from house to house.

My upstairs neighbors are a$$hats. The entire unit has wood floors. Someone is stomping all over the living room floor. Occasionally running all over the living room. Now there’s jumping up and down in one spot. It’s 8:40pm here and I have to put up with this until 10pm when condo association quiet rules go into effect. After 10pm is when I can call the cops. At this point, it sounds like it’s deliberate.

I’m not going upstairs because I’ve been threatened before by others who’ve lived there before when I went up to ask them to turn music down. Plus, my knees can’t take the stairs.

I don’t know if these are new tenants up there or not.

About noise: this is so dumb its funny.

I set up a Zoom meeting last week, an important one for our organization During the meeting DH decided to tear into our dishwasher in the nearby kitchen because it wasn't cleaning properly. Banging, clanging during this meeting, but shortlived. And THEN he removed the bottom rack and set it on heavy duty wash, a long loud cycle. Aye, carumba!

Couldn't get away from the noise without going upstairs.

In the next 5 weeks I have 8 Zoom meetings and will have to clue in DH to please make no repairs during those times.sounds of sawing often come from our basement, too. These Are sounds I normally like because it means something is progressing, but not during meetings!

That’s why I wanted a condo on the top floor with a elevator. I will take the steps but when I have items I need the elevator. I bought myself a wire cart that I will keep in my car and put my items in to transport. The laundry room is on the first floor so will use it for that also. I am buying a apartment dryer that vents into a bucket of water and putting it in my second bedroom. Most of my clothes I hang to dry anyways. I will wash everything at once and then dry in my condo. "The garden cart"

"What are you talking about?"

Me, getting frustrated: "You know! You bought it a few years ago at Home Depot. You love it!"

Him: "I still don't know what the hell you're talking about."

Me, getting more frustrated: "It's black! It has 4 wheels! You keep it by your workshop!"

Him, light coming on: "Oh, you mean the wagon? It's a WAGON. A Gorilla WAGON. It's not an F-ing 'garden cart'! What, should we get out the tea and crumpets??!!"

I have that same cart for hauling around floral designs and flower show stuff, but I have not decided yet if it is more trouble than it is worth.

I prefer loading stuff into 5 gallon buckets for most jobs. Two of those usually do the job for me.

I made it though this whole weeklong mess with 3 inches of snow and record low temps without losing my electricity or my water and with no frozen pipes. Then today (Saturday) the first day the weather has been nice, the fan on my 25 year old HVAC unit stops working!

The central AC quit working during the summer, but I don't care enough about AC to fix it. So I was ok as long as I had heat. Now I don't have heat and there's no point cheaping out on the replacement by only fixing the heat. Bottom line: I need a whole new HVAC unit (both the indoor and outside part) everything except the ductwork. >:(

The only good thing about it is this happened after that coldspell was over and it's supposed to be warm for the next week. So I guess I should be happy about that, at least.

Catherine, I'm still laughing. I read this aloud to my husband who also laughed. We have had many of those conversations. I tend to use a tarp no for hauling weeds to the compost as it's easier for me to navigate.

We use a tarp many times, too. We do not have a garden cart or a wheelbarrow. For my once a year a garden cleanup of my city garden I use empty garbage cans. They are plastic and lightweight so they’re easy to haul around.

Maintaining the wheels on wheeled vehicle is a pain in the ass so that’s one reason why we don’t have them. Theoretically I could borrow one of the wheelbarrow in our community garden but it’s always too much trouble to go a block and a half to get them.

Thank God it happened after the cold spell. And also, 25 years is a pretty good life for an HVAC systemI know. And I haven't had to spend any money on it except a "yearly" checkup every other year and having a little freon put in it every 5 years or so. But I was really hoping It would stay functional at least until summer. By then I'll either be ready to sell this house and move back to Georgia, or ready to bite the bullet and stay here.

But there is one other "good" thing about this situation. I paid $56,000 for this house in 2000 and Zwillow.com says current market value is $178,000, so the cost of the new HVAC is a drop in the bucket compared to the current property value.

My go-to method for hauling most everything is 5 gallon buckets. Even in our community garden where we have wheelbarrows a loaded wheelbarrow is hard to maneuver up and over a brick border. I just don’t like to mess with them. I like the simplicity and ease of holding a bucket in either hand, they are more maneuverable.

My senior friend I grocery shop for has been asking me to get a can of Lysol SPRAY disinfectant for months. It's been out of stock, for obvious reasons. I'd check every time I went to the grocery store. Found a couple of large cans at Jewel, the big Chicago grocery chain, where I shop (and where senior friend always shopped). No price sticker on the shelf, but I didn't really think about it. You know what it range up at? $10! Crazy! I don't know what it sold pre-pandemic, as I've not bought the stuff in probably 20 years. Senior friend was so happy to have a can she didn't really care about the cost. She has been well supplied with wipes so I'm not sure why she wanted the spray.

$10 for a big can of Lysol spray. Still boggles my mind.

A frequent annoyance is people who think parking next to a motorcycle means they can intrude on the motorcycle's parking space by letting their vehicle hang over the parking space line by several inches or even several feet. Not only is it disrespectful to the motorcyclist, but since the motorcycle was there first it will probably leave first and the intruding vehicle will be left sitting there occupying two parking spaces and making its driver look like the a$$hole they absolutely are.

BTW: I always park a reasonable distance out in every parking lot to leave the prime parking spaces for people who may need them more than I do, and yet 10% of the time some a$$hole will park next to me or in front of me with their vehicle across the line, even though there are plenty of other empty parking spaces available as there were this time.

I have noticed that as well, GP. We have a lot of bikers visiting in the summer. My aggravation is a few of the extended cab trucks with tow-hitches that take up 2 spaces in a grocery parking lot. To be fair, most do park outside of the usual parking spaces.
My challenge lately is the high rears of the newer SUV's who park next to me. I have to back out of my parking spot almost completely before I am able to see if a vehicle is coming. This happened last Wednesday evening, I couldn't see through their windows which are too high from my sitting position, couldn't see around them and had to creep out hoping any car coming was going slowly; I was doing this all the while I am watching for shoppers walking in either direction and cars across the lane backing towards me. I am getting to the point with the large SUV's of choosing a drive-thru parking spot to avoid being stuck.

GeorgeParker

My challenge lately is the high rears of the newer SUV's who park next to me. I have to back out of my parking spot almost completely before I am able to see if a vehicle is coming. It's the same thing with short-nose vans and tall SUVs/pickups that come up on your left at an intersection. They sit there and sit there because they're waiting for traffic to be clear in both directions so they can turn left or go straight across, and all the time they're sitting there you're stuck. You can't pull out and make your right turn because you can't see over their damn hood and you have no way of knowing whether or not a car is coming in the curbside lane.

At least on a motorcycle I can stand up to get my head above their hood, or lean way out above my front wheel to see around them, or move forward at a 45-degree angle so I can turn my handlebars and use my rearview mirror to see what's coming without my front wheel sticking out beyond the curb. In a car you can't do that, you're just stuck until the inconsiderate slob moves.

Now let's pick on the little guys!!!!! On one occasion when I parked at the front on a parking space instead parking in the middle or near the back, some moron in a small (Smartcar size) car parked behind me in the same space with their rear bumper sticking a foot out into the traffic aisle. It was one of those parking spaces with a sidewalk between it and the street, and apparently that moron thought since I was on a motorcycle I could just jump the curb and ride across the sidewalk to get out. >:( I could, and I did, but I shouldn't have had to!

BTW: Normally I park close enough to the end of a parking space so that people driving down the aisle looking for a parking space will see my wheel and not think it's an empty space. That's a common practice because we realize how annoying it is if a cager (car driver) swings wide and starts to turn into a space only to discover the space isn't empty. At the same time we don't want to park all the way back and have our bike get hit by someone who swings wide while backing out because our bike didn't register on their consciousness the way a car would have. Again trucks and SUVs with high windows are a major threat in this regard. So It's a constant balancing act. Supposedly some bikers carry an orange cloth bag with them and put it over the top of their sissy bar as a warning to people who park next to them. I don't have a sissy bar, but that seems like a good idea if I did have one.

One time while I was parked at a restaurant someone backed out of the parking space opposite mine and bumped my rear wheel! Apparently they mis-estimated where my motorcycle was because they couldn't see it over their tailgate. :0! Fortunately they barely touched it and no damage was done, but unfortunately I was inside watching through a window and couldn't get outside in time to stop them. As it was, if I hadn't been parked on the side of the building next to the windows I wouldn't have even known it happened, but it would have been bad if they had bumped it hard enough to move the kickstand and make it fall over.

Arghhhgg, mom! I am mad at my mom (poor woman, ten+ years deceased.)

As part of my task of cleaning out books, I took down from the shelf an ancient Victorian photo album that contained 35 photos of an old house we lived during my childhood. The album is falling apart and needs to go to the landfill. I carefully removed the house photos my mother had placed in the album because I want to sent them to the new owners of the old house.

Well, I’ll be damned. Behind these house photos are old family photos of our ancient family members. I had no idea these were photos she had pasted over. I had no idea this was a legitimate family photo album, I thought it was something she got at a garage sale.

Thanks mom. NOT!!! Thanks so much for giving me more work than I wanted to take on. Granted, there’s not a ton of photos there’s probably about seven images, but I can’t just throw them out because my rule is I don’t throw out pictures of the ancient ones. I will have to figure out who the ancient ones are and maybe send them to people or scan them or something. I thought I finished that project years ago.

Kinda a rant, kinda not.

Someone I’ve been trying to push out of the position in our neighborhood board has FINALLY said he will step out of that position.

He was doing such a bad job for so long he pretty much killed a program that used to be popular in our neighborhood. He’s doing such a bad job that our neighborhood wide strategic plan had residents calling for an audit of the program he was “running.” But he wasn’t “running” it because he’s useless and ineffective.Longtime residents have been shaking their head s about it and washed their hands of the program because it’s so poorly run.

Of course I’m the only one with the fkg balls to push him out.

Soooo, are you able to pick up the pieces and restart the program or is it killed by incompetence?
That is really the million dollar question.

I do not honestly know if the program is a failure because the neighborhood doesn’t care enough about it to make it work, or if it’s a failure because he doesn’t do necessary work.

Two months ago I set myself up as the head of a committee to evaluate the program with my authority being our neighborhood strategic plan which we paid $25,000 for. One of the things that our residents told us in the planning process that they wanted this program to be evaluated. To me it’s pretty clear that there’s enough unhappiness on the ground with it that my board needs to address its problems.

The past two months I have been collecting records for a volunteer database that he did not keep up. We didn’t even know who was a current volunteer. I have acted as his administrative secretary, kind of his girl Friday, in keeping up with communications with our volunteers. I know exactly what they should be doing because I’m one of those volunteers.

I tell my board that I don’t honestly know if this is a viable program, but we have all agreed to give it our best shot and evaluate it next December. The real problem is that our board is unable to pull the plug on anything and they don’t have clear guidelines even though we have gone into it saying we want 75% of our neighborhood involved in this program.

My term of office is up in the fall and I won’t be renewing because I’m moving out of the city. Someone will have to step in to lead this program. If no one steps up to lead it, it’s dead. And really, that’s fine it deserves to die if no one wants to keep it going. But I think I’ve got a lead on somebody who would take over because she’s already told me she tried to get him to resign years ago he wouldn’t and she gave up on the whole program.

It’s desperately hard to get these idiots out of these positions. In my neighborhood the president position turns over every two years and there’s always new board members so they don’t really know how well somethings are being done. Incompetence hide under the radar.

Five years ago we pushed the head of the community garden out after she had appointed herself as the leader for 20 years. It was a very ugly series of events and there was ummm, err, mediation. My team members carried out our part of mediation, I stayed away.

That was absolutely the right move for our community garden because it has thrived since she left. We require new leadership every two years. Yes it is a bumpy road to train new people and yes they have the same ideas that we hear over and over, but that’s OK. They’re enthusiastic about doing things and they take ownership of a corner of the garden and make up it their own. Everyone gets a fair shot at getting a garden bed. These things did not happen under the leadership of the former garden diva.

Peeve. Common sense is totally missing. Went to Einstein Bagels for a refill coffee and a bagel. No you cannot use your refill cup but we will handle and give you a paper cup to use over at the refill station. Then you can pour that coffee into your refill plastic container. So I went to the coffee station and noticed that every customer has to handle the coffee urn handle and the creamer containers to fill their supposedly safer paper cups.

So instead of one employee handling the cup and filling it, I am actually exposed to every customer's "germs". I just thought it was so crazy and went ahead and had my coffee in my own cup.

(Do know it is because of covid) No one touches the refill cup but me and it touches nothing else. I place it under the spout of the coffee urn. Then I proceed to touch all the handles that are not sanitized. Plus I take the paper cup from an ungloved employee who handles credit cards and money (they did not have a card reader). The safest thing in the place for me is my refill cup that only I have touched.

I enjoyed my coffee and bagel but cannot get over the crazy lengths companies go to follow what they perceive as rules without common sense. The best in this situation would be to have masked and gloved employees (not the cashier) fill the paper cups behind the counter. But that is not their business plan.

First time we have gone to this business since before the pandemic. You can tell we do not visit coffee houses.

Our state is loosening up early April. Masks will be recommended but not mandated. Business rules will pretty much be back to pre pandemic rules.

1. Ignoring posts that I think are really out of line
2. Responding to the pain that I am observing in some of the posts, and expressing empathy and sympathy where appropriate
3. Refusing to talk about people in the third person--if I want to respond to another poster, respond directly to them, but I really dislike this talking about other people in the third person

That is what I am trying to do, for me, in response to this situation on our forums. Don't know if it helps or not, but all I can do is control me and attempt to be the change I want to see and all that.

But Catherine and Rosa, I agree, I want our old happy forum back.

The Credit Union I have been a member of for twenty or so years recently updated their online banking sight which has totally rendered my Quicken program to track expenses completely useless. This has literally been going on for SIX weeks. Even before they launched their new website, I was having trouble connecting to the bank and lodged at least eight calls to Quicken tech support to get them to help me fix things. The fixes only lasted a few days each. Then the bank launched their new website about three weeks ago, and for the first two weeks I couldn't connect to the bank at all. Then last week I was able to connect but their new online banking program doesn't "talk" to the Quicken program correctly so now there are double entries, a LOT of erroneous information in the wrong fields; the online balances between the bank and the program NEVER match up, etc, etc.

Things this has taught me: for over twenty years the exact counting of my monies going in and out of my life have been very important to me. It was a source of comfort and focus when I was a struggling single parent. It also fed my need for control. To be able to know these things to the exact penny when everything else in my life was spinning out of control helped calm me down. Seeing my savings grow, even in tiny increments, was very encouraging to me. To find places where I could cut back on spending also gave me a sense of control. And on a really practical level, Quicken is where I track my business expenses. Now everything is all screwed up and I have no idea if or when they are ever going to get this problem fixed.

When I call the bank to get updates, I can't get through. Sometimes the phone rings thirty times before I give up. Yesterday and today after I got through the phone tree, I was caller #78 in the que. I bet their IT Department wished they NEVER launched their new program...why can't they leave well enough alone? I had NO PROBLEM with the look of their online banking platform; now I hate the way it looks and operates.

I'm sorry this has happened, SQ. It gums up the works really quickly.

I'll guess the IT department at the CU wishes it had never changed the software, too, but (not knowing what was behind the decision) it may not have been their choice. Software platforms get outmoded (especially in today's environment of constant cyberattacks), vendors go out of business or get merged out of business, and customer demands sometimes force changes (secure mobile clients, etc.).

Long story short, they may not have had a choice in the change. I'll guess the IT department is cussing out the software vendor fully as much as customers are. That doesn’t necessarily make things any better for you, but, having been through migrations similar to this, I'm pretty sure all hands are on deck right now and they are working to fix it and want it fixed as much as you do. I hope it's soon and seamless from here.

One of my banks is dropping telephone banking. They want everyone to go online, which I consider risky. Fortunately it is not my primary bank. I hate when people try to fix things that weren't broken.

I’m surprised you even use the internet at all. Not being snarky, just an observation.

Who thought it was a good idea to make beds that are so high they are impossible to get into?

I am staying in a Bed and Breakfast Inn down the block from my (nearly uninhabitable) Hermann house and while it is otherwise very nice, the bed is as high as my belly button. I have to propel myself upward to fling myself on it face first.

My friend had a bed this high and she was shorter than me. She had a set of steps to get into it. I remember one time we were all laying in her bed, DH, Me, her (we are pretty good friends!) to watch her new tv and we all had a heckova time getting positioned.

How many complaints do I get today? Ha ha. Not kidding though.

#1: DH is putting pressure on me to choose light fixtures for our Hermann house. This is exactly what I hate, having to go through each room and figure out where the light fixtures are going to go and then pick out appropriate fixtures. So that’s one kind of rant, but I have another rant and that is it this house has 8 foot ceilings. That makes everything harder if if you want to hang pendant lights. In fact I really don’t even know if I can hang pendant lights and chandeliers. My city house has 11 foot ceilings and I never had to worry about lights coming down too low.

#2: my 2017 model Fiat spider car has advance electronics that I don’t like. For the last year and a half, I’ve been punching at the radio trying to get the stupid thing to change channels. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn’t. It was making me crazy, and I mentioned to DH that I think there’s something wrong with the electronics. DH laughed and said “they have probably programmed it so that you can’t change the radio while you’re driving.”

WTF.What genius came up with this idea? Sure enough, when I put that theory to the test, yes I can change the radio stations when the car is at a stop and then as I looked it up, up to 5 miles moving I can change radio stations.

#3: As part of my complaint that my car has random electronic things wrong with it, I mentioned to DH that my windshield wipers came on yesterday with no provocation. Honestly I didn’t touch the knob and they just came on by themselves. Once again, DH laughed and said “it probably has a precipitation sensor and if it senses a little bit of rain, they make a swipe. “

#4: DH is right too often

razz

Laughing at your rants, IL. I think it is great when the DH's are right too often finding it reassuring that 'I' made the smart choice in order to know about things that I didn't. You don't mention how often you have been right though.

Others would buy this car because these features are among the many other extras. Your car salesman didn't mention these features when you bought the car? BTW I didn't know that a car was named a spider. I thought that was only for 3-wheel motor bikes. Things I am learning!

RE the lights and 8 foot ceilings: I don't like hanging lights so opt for flush lighting fixtures except over the dining table. The new LED lighting options can help you direct your light to focus on highlights in the room which I think adds a lot of flexibility.
Have you considered whether you are having fans with the lights? I love these in the bedrooms especially.

I also dislike new car features and am going to keep lane departure turned off. Part of my commute involves going through a road work zone where we have to go back and forth to the breakdown lane. If I let the car take over I would be hitting orange cones or possibly construction workers. Another thing that crossed my mind is if a deer jumps in front of me (as one did the other day) and I swerve to miss it the car will stop my swerve and slam me into the deer. I think it is stupid technology, especially when not paired with a sensor that detects objects and keeps you from hitting them.

SteveinMN
4-9-21, 4:22pm
AFAIK lane departure in most cars is just a warning -- lights on the dash or a buzzer/beep or such (both of our cars are too old to have it but that's how it works on DD's Honda Pilot). I find it annoying but, then, I'm not typically dozing off at the wheel so maybe I'm not the target customer for this feature. There are cars which can drive themselves enough to correct for what it sees as a lane departure or a road obstruction but I think they cost much more than the cars most of us drive daily and they all let the driver override the car's initial action with the steering wheel, brake, etc.

You felt a little tension on the wheel while correcting but it reminded me of those days before power steering, only not that hard.

Interesting. I don't remember the Pilot correcting the lane departure, just informing. Then again, my very first car didn't even have power steering (neither did my second IIRC) so maybe I just reacted without thinking about it.

yes, cars with old geezer features would be good!

It makes it hard especially for us old geezers who are somewhat frugal because we change cars ONLY every 10 or 15 years and the new features are light years different from the old car we just got rid of.

Add me to the list of old car lover. Hubby wants to replace our Honda sedan for a new model due to some safety features he loves in his CRV. I would feel less safe being distracted by all the confusing new features and do not drive his CRV. When I could not figure out how to turn on the radio, or change the volume I knew I was in trouble. Then the darn car started to talk (bluetooth from phone). Talk about being distracted. I dont even sing while driving.

It was hard going from my 10 year old Honda to the one I have now that is 8 years old. I find the easiest way to stay safe in a car is to drive less. The drivers we are encountering are worse than ever.

My DH and I just don't have the same standards when it comes to cleaning up in the kitchen. He literally has a mental block about cleaning out the old bits of food in the sink trap after washing the dishes. I often find myself doing a second cleaning after his turn to do the dishes because half the counters are not wiped down, the stove top is grease-splattered, and there are hand prints on the refrigerator door handles. But at least he does do the dishes everyday, which is a huge improvement from his bachelor days where he would let them sit in the sink for days on end. I knew this going into our partnership and have mostly accepted that we just have different standards, plus he pays far more of the mortgage than I do and I do most (really all) of the cleaning to add to my "share" of the household.

But it is the old food in the dish drainer that really skeeves me out in the morning if I forget to check and take care of it the night before. I have asked him to do it several times as part of kitchen-cleaning duty but he is very absent-minded and it is just not on his radar. Oh well, it's pretty minor in the scope of things.....

DW is much like SQ's DH (enough initials there? ;) ). I am fully convinced that, even if DW sees the mess, her brain spends zero cycles on interpreting the visual information. At 11 years into the marriage, I hold no hope that that will change. Can't change what you don't see and I've tried plenty to aid her vision.

But I'm sure she could say the same things about what I don't "see", too.

Sometime dive buddy has been unemployed since finishing an advanced degree, about six months ago. She is in a very conservative field. Her parents are extremely wealthy and she lives with them (she’s early 30s). She was lamenting recently about how difficult the job search is and how lucky I was to find a job so quickly. She recently was posting all over her public (not locked down) FB page that she’s polyamorous. She has three partners and they have their own partners and so on. I told her I had made sure I had nothing objectionable on my FB before my job search. I suggested she might want to consider if her multiple mentions of her sex life on her not locked down FB profile may affect her job search.

She’s heterosexual and her proclivities for multiple partners isn’t covered under non-discrimination laws, I believe, although I could be wrong.

She called me a bunch of not polite names and hung up the phone.

DH did not see things that needed to be done. He asked that I make a list of chores because he really could not see what needed to be done. That solved the problem. Things that I saw were just not on his radar and having a "reminder list" was helpful to him (and me). YLMV

They're going to sand? If it snowed here on April 16 (where we get five feet of snow a year) they'd just wait the day or two it would take to melt. Unless they had to plow it. But they certainly would not spend $$ on salt or sand. As a taxpayer, I'm absolutely fine with that.

This isn't really a rant, but it's a complaint. I am the family hermit and DH is the family ringleader. So we always have to compromise; otherwise, I'd have the mailman and the bar buddies at our house 24/7. I had a really long, stressful work week last week--probably 70 hours.

Friday our neighbors T&C&M came up and came by for pre-dinner drinks. That was fine. Last night, he invited them over again--we had a nice time, but I didn't get to bed until midnight. This morning we went to Burlington to see our son, and this afternoon, our DD and DSIL are coming. In the meantime, our neighbors that have a second residence here came for the night--they'e good friends. So DH invites T&C&M plus K&D to join DD and DSIL for DINNER! We were planning on pulled pork for DD/DSIL but there's just enough so I told him that I hope he's Jesus Christ so he can pull some loaves and fishes out of the air.

I'm just not in the mood for a big shebang today. Did that Friday. Did it again on Saturday. Don't want anything to interfere with quality time with DD. I'm tired. ..

Oh, well, it's all good. They're all good people, but my introverted self is hitting a wall right about now.

ETA: The other fly in the ointment is that DSIL doesn't know that K&D are here and he is extremely angry with K because of something he said to DSIL's mother at the wedding last fall. So THAT will be awkward if they wind up at our table together tonight.

We took our oldest (special needs) grandson camping in Tennessee last month, it was the first time we'd taken the camper out this year. When we arrived at the campsite and hooked up our utilities we discovered a huge leak in our toilet causing water to spray all over the bathroom. A quick inspection revealed that a water supply regulator located at the rear base of the toilet had failed due to my incomplete winterization of the unit before placing it into winter storage. I did a quick Google search of Camping World locations and found one about a 40 minute drive from our campsite, called them to see if they had the part in stock and found they did have one, just one. Jumped in the truck and got to the store 15 minutes before closing, secured the part and rushed back to the camper. Had to completely remove the toilet in order to get access to the bad part which then took less than 5 minutes to replace before re-installing the toilet and turning the water back on.

Received major praise from both wife and grandson who were both fidgeting and anxious to try out a working toilet, although I'm still getting reminders from the wife to make sure I do a better job of winterizing later this year.

What SQ has run into is similar to what I've run into -- some financial institutions just don't "talk" to financial tracking apps. I use SEE Finance on my Mac and our credit union does not link through Quicken or other mechanisms. Using the Quicken conduit costs the financial institution, so some don't connect that way. That is interesting to know that even these financial tracking apps are costing the CU's. Probably all the banking institutions have to devote considerable IT resources to enable/protect/maintain the links of the wide variety of such apps.

Hmmm, that is interesting to know Steve. I never thought of it that way. The kicker is that it worked *almost* seamlessly for all those years (I'd get a few glitches now and again that would get fixed with a call to Quicken Support).

Catherine, you nailed it. I am lost in the morass of credit card purchases and money transfers between accounts. I use my credit card for almost all purchases because I get interest back on the Jan. 1 each year as long as I pay off the balance monthly (which I do religiously). I check my accounts each day for security sake and rely on tracking expenditures to give me a measure of control in my life. It's weird, lately, spending money on stuff for the house and garden is giving me great anxiety and making me long for the simplicity of living in the tiny quarters behind the gallery. I think I have hit critical mass concerning daily living expenditures because each time I spend money on housing-related stuff it creates anxiety, because I start thinking that if we hadn't bought a house, I'd have around $50,000 in savings by now and a much simpler life. Yet I really love the house at the same time...

SQ, I so relate to your anxiety as my late DH really struggled for a few years as I insisted on buying our homes despite the fact that we never suffered a loss but a gain, sometimes substantial. I never fully understood his level of anxiety until we bought our first farm for a ridiculously low offer that was accepted. I was having a bath, heard the phone ring and he came into the bathroom and announced, 'Now you have really done it. They accepted that offer." Two years later, it was sold for triple that price and his anxiety was considerably reduced ever after.

May I suggest? Acknowledge your anxiety as it is perfectly normal, look at the house as a form of invested currency (equity, shares. etc), set a value on the freedom from rent for space enjoyed, the freedom to use the space as you wish and the satisfaction and contentment with a foreseeable future. While it may not be as easily a 'liquid' investment as $50 thousand in the bank, a house usually keeps pace with inflation better than a $ bill, IMHO anyway.

Owning where you live is priceless. You can make it how you want to, no one can make you move and for me it is much cheaper than renting.

They accepted that offer." I had to chuckle at that, razz! Sometimes our joys are our biggest responsibilities but it looks like you really made your responsibilities pay off!

There are reasons why people are lifelong renters. My son is one. Every time our plumbing gets clogged or we talk about the roof leaking, he chimes up: "See!! That's why I don't want to own a house!" He has a point. When he shells out his $875 for rent for the 1-bedroom apartment he's had in Burlington for 7 years, he knows that's it. No add-ons for repairs, or want-to-haves or need-to-haves. As long as there is food in his fridge and he's hung pictures on the wall and clothes in the closet, he's done.

But, OTOH, I have the freedom to carve up my lawn or let it be, of painting or adding-on, or passing it on. When my house is paid off, I will have a couple of hundred bucks in property taxes and that's it. There is freedom in that, too.

The key is resisting the "need-to-haves" that are really "want-to-haves" That's the hard part.

Two days ago DH mentioned “we have too much money tied up in real estate” which is unusual coming from him. Usually I’m the one leery of real estate assets. According to our most recent asset snapshot we have a little more than 1/6 of our net worth tied up in real estate. I told him for the average American, that’s not all that much. But I agree it’s not good, and as we pour more money into our Herman house in the next 12 months it’s going to be more, and it will continue to be a higher percentage than we both like in real estate until we sell our city house.

Catherine, I’m like your son. I’ve been in the same suburban Chicago rented condo for almost 13 years. My rent had only gone up $100/month in all that time. At $900/month, it’s at least $200/month below market. Landlord recognizes it saved him a lot by having a long-term tenant. No advertising, repainting, recarpeting, etc., every year or two.

SiouzQ, have you considered a card that notifies you of any purchase over a $$ amount you set? We find this gives us great peace of mind. I only suggest this because you say you " I check my accounts each day for security sake". However, I understand a habit.

We paid far more attention to our accounts when we were carefully tracking everything.

My MIL was a fastidious housekeeper but in her later years she slipped a little and one year never took down her Christmas wreath. That year, she had to have home health care, and the person who came to visit her refused to come in when she saw the wreath. She was Jamaican and it was something about bad spirits being in the house because of the dead wreath. (Maybe the Jamaican version of feng shui?).

I bought two really attractive plants yesterday at a local garden center that I intended to keep for house plants. I googled the names while I was there, and they were apparently both safe for cats. Delved a little further once I got home, and the plants were labeled incorrectly and are very toxic to cats. So I will use them outside during the warm months and then find them a home with a non-cat household before winter. We were also looking for Firecracker Plant (Cuphea). An employee asked if I was looking for something in particular, so I told her what I wanted. She asked another employee, and they seemed a bit dubious since they hadn't heard of it, like I must be making it up or something. They asked a senior employee (might have been the owner). He was kind of a sourpuss and he said "I know we don't have that." They actually did have it; my DH found it. This is a small local garden center we were trying to help support, but I was not too impressed with the experience.

The flower show ladies are creating a virtual flowers show with entries being photographs. Someone is insisting on printing out each photo and filing it away in her paper folders. Why? I ask. ‘Because’ she answers.

But because this printing person enjoys conflict, as a head honcho with some authority in the game, i just assured others on our committee “let her spend her own time/paper/colored ink printing out entries. There is no purpose behind her actions, but whatever.”

But now comes the stupid part: the printing person is complaining because some of the photos take up 3-4 sheets of paper and she wants to return those entries to exhibitors and have them re-submitted in another format that takes up less paper.

AYE, CARUMBA!

We have already specified the process for submitting and using photos and that specification does NOT support printing on paper.

This strikes such a chord with me because it is a circa 1985 action reminding me of the PAINFUL transition from paper to digital, when I supervised ladies like the print fiend who wanted to, essentially, print out the internet. Made me crazy then, makes me crazy now.

Too many of these volunteer jobs are reminding me of the days of work and that is NOT a place Where I want my head.

So since my bank took away telephone banking I tried to set up online banking. It took several tries due to technical difficulties on their end. Then I got to terms and conditions and they wanted me to agree that if any malware or spyware gets on my computer and wipes out my entire retirement savings I am responsible. Now I do have anti-virus software but I think a smart enough person could circumvent it. Hackers knocked out gas to the entire southeastern US. Why would I ever agree to such a thing? I clicked decline and I guess my option is to call the customer service reps every day and ask them to verify my balance which is a hassle because of all the security questions I have to go through. Most of my commute is on winding roads, one lane each way with the occasional turn late. Speed limit is 55. A delivery truck for a local business was going 30 for most of the way I was behind him, for about 7-8 miles. There was a VERY long line of cars behind me (I was two cars behind this truck). When stopped at a light at an intersection, where I turn off this road, I took a photo of the back of the truck, showing truck number, business name, and phone number. I see the driver has his white Apple earbuds in at least his left ear. He's laughing and carrying on. I'm calling the business tomorrow and reporting his butt. There is absolutely no reason to go 25 mph BELOW the speed limit, especially when you're holding up traffic like he was.

I don't have an ATM card either. It was more not really seeing the need. I mean there is a need to go to the bank in person periodically anyway due to the need for quarters so I can do laundry. Can't get that at an ATM.

But with an ATM card it might be less frequent (at least if the pandemic driven quarter shortage ever ends, i can't even get more than 2 rolls at a time now). So I may reconsider the ATM thing.

The Simple Living Forums goal? What is it?
I had thought it was a spot to share ideas, communicate with those interested in simple living and support those seeking a simpler life. Please correct me if I am wrong, where and in what manner.

When the anonymity of the posters is used to post without consideration of others that would violate any neighbourhood gathering with its diverse membership, what would the response of the neighbourhood be?

This is not a money management forum or such-like but a diverse group of members from all walks of life.

I am realistic and recognize that social media has changed discourse in general, other social groups undergo change, atrophy and die or move into different directions than originally designed. That is life.

Do you see that SLF has changed? How?

This is not intended as Sensitivity Police post, as Idahl calls it, but a genuine evaluation of direction for both the site and from its members.

Since there's no top down structure to these forums I think the community itself gets to define what it's goals and ideals are.

I think we saw in these forums first iteration that attempting to keep a diverse community on topic, which could only be accomplished through strict moderation, created more drama and division than intended, and probably contributed to it's abandonment by its founder.

In it's second iteration I feel it was used by a non-profit as an outreach to a new group of potential supporters and when that didn't work as hoped, it was abandoned again.

The only reason it still exists here in it's third iteration is because I thought the community might want a place to stay together in a place with no un-due expectations of profitability or outreach. That's why we don't have strict, top-down rules or goals. My philosophy is that the community gets to define what it is by allowing its members to discuss anything of interest. I wish people wouldn't gang up on each other and promote division, but that happens sometimes.

I think you’re right. It’s a sort of pack behavior thing that doesn’t add anything to the discussion. I also have little use for “+1” posts for the same reason. If you agree, say why. Otherwise it’s just another form of piling on without providing any sort of argument or counter argument.

The point of ice creaming is virtue signaling. I know because I do it myself to signal to my tribe “I’m with you.” A Reddit upvoting button does the same.

I also like the fact that no one is censored even if there is too much ice creaming and some pretty repetitive posts coming out of certain posters, me included. You all can joke all you like about salad spinners, but we really don’t talk about salad spinners often maybe, what, once every two years? Saw the evil ex at the gas station. Why can't the world be a bigger place? I like this gas station but now I'm going to start going elsewhere.

Why can't you just ignore and go on with your life?

I am going on with my life. I am not foregoing the use of gas.

If someone stole from your disabled child would you want to see that person?

As I recall you are liberal. How you feel about running into Donald Trump? Would it make you cringe? Would you try to avoid Trump Tower, Mar-a-Lago, or other places where you might run into him?

Here is my peeve: I opened a bottle of 2012 Merlot from Columbia Winery. I usually like the Columbia Valley red wines. I always like Merlot.

This was not drinkable. There was sediment in it but that really is not a problem it was just —not good.I even set it aside for a few days in case that first sip was not indicative of the entire bottle. UGG.

You recall wrong. I am an independent. I would not go out of my way for trump. I would just ignore his ugly a$$. He is not worth the effort of recognizing or even acknowledging. He no longer has the power to affect my life.

Recently met a guy that used to be a friend at a garage sale. I stood right next to him and said not a word. The only way people can get †o you is if you let them. Your ex won because he still affects you.

Did Eichmann win at his trial because he was stonefaced and occasionally had a flicker of a smile? Did his victims during that trial, shaken by Eichmann's crimes, lose?

Or is your interpretation facile and dismissive of victimized people?

I have heard people with your mentality before dismissing victim discomfort.

"So a priest touched your a$$, get over it" or dismissing MeToo concerns.

Good to know what type of person you are.

Maybe you could travel to Surfside and offer your amateur counseling there - they're obviously dead, give up the false hope, get over it, get on with your lives, don't let those who ignored the building reports win by being affected.

I was in that mind frame too... I changed where I shopped. where I showed my horses etc ( he kept his horse in the area) etc..... Until I finally realized that he is a miserable person and treats everyone else the same way he treated me. It was not about me... Since I found out that he treated other women the same way, it became non personal to me. That was very freeing
Back story: we got married, it ended 7 years later. The house we were in was the love of my life. I was able to cash him out ( Thank You Gramma ) He had to be out by Oct. He drug his feet until he was threatened with involvement if the law. And because he was the KING of passive aggressive, he moved out, leaving a mess for me to clean up .. And the ultimate move of passive aggressive, he rented a house 1/2 mile from me, on the same street. The freeway was closer him by going north. I would see him going south past my place to go to the freeway. And yes, I would see him rubberneck to see if I was outside or what was going on with the house. The area that I worked my horses was parallel to the road, so I saw him drive by often. It was a very impowering moment for me . I began shopping where I used to, I started showing back at where he had his horse. I moved on... And that is an awesome feeling

Boss mare, good for you taking charge of your life!

Thank You. I found that by going about your business and ignoring them gives me the power.
also... quite awhile ago, I posted on the Family and Relationships section that I was listed as deceased on my high school memorial FB page. September 2019 was our 40th high school reunion . My first husband ( the passive aggressive on was #2 ) was there . I ignored him too. and here he thought I was dead LOL. Jeppy.... Ya gotta try and find the humor in things

It was most likely a one-off chance that he was there. Now... Lets look at this a step further. What if he decides to got to a different gas station because he saw you. And you go to a different one. And this different one turns out to be the one you both inadvertently decide to frequent. Then what? best thing to do is ignore him. There is a saying "Living Well Is The Best Revenge"

Usually I get gas on the way home but there was a storm so I went in the morning. So if I go in the evening plus somewhere else I should be doubly good. The last I knew he didn't have a car and he was buying snacks and drinks not gas. So if I go a couple miles away I likely will not see him.

And I was glad I had put on weight, let my hair go gray, and was dressed unattractively. Living well I might still be attractive to him and I want to repel him.

The only sure thing besides death and taxes is the other shoe dropping when things are doing well.

Just need to get in the habit of not getting overly excited about something, as when something is going well, the other shoe drops sooner than later.

Not work related. I can't discuss it.

The function to spray windshield washer fluid on my new car doesn't work. There was also no washer fluid in it. I put some I had in and it still doesn't work. Here goes another Saturday at the dealership.

Minor rant, not really rant worthy, but a comment on society: why are people so afraid of color in their homes?
We visited 3 homes last Saturday night in a progressive dinner. Each one was decorated in various shades of light grey. Grey floors for the most part. Grey or white kitchen cabinets. All houses have been decorated over a 3 year period.

“They have good taste!” Said my friend with good taste about one of these houses.

They do?

The single piece of decor I really remember in these houses was a set of dining room chairs upholstered in mustard yellow. Finally, some color.

This year my friend with good taste ripped out his fabulous lacquer red kitchen cabinets to put in the ubiquitous white Shaker kitchen. He painted his first floor grey (surprise!) from the formerly wonderful chartreuse. I am thinking he doesn’t have good taste any more, he has joined the ranks of the Grey people.

please understand I LOVE grey as a neutral and absolutely love white kitchens and if these choices weren’t in every damn house that is what I would have chosen for my condo. But, I just can’t do it, my condo needs some personality.

While I can understand your rant, I have to disagree somewhat. I love the neutral colours to act as a canvas to which I add colour in flowers, bright placemats, plants, bright plates on the wall, etc. My kitchen cupboards are a very dark brown which I like but it is hard to keep dust-free when the sun shines on it.

I got nuttin’ against neutral backgrounds if they serve as foil for colored objects.

Also, neutral decor with lots of texture and contrast is great.

These weren’t that, although I will say that a custom designed-by-owner center hall chandelier was pretty groovy, and bright in multi color.

Or neutral walls and floors with interesting furniture and art…one of my friends has that. I cannot even tell you the color of their walls, some sort of white I suppose. But they have stunning antique pieces and big art.

it is just when everything is grey and smooth Um, no.

I agree--I'd like to see lots more variation in decorating trends out there, but people are timid and don't like to fall too far out of line. But I say that as one whose house has ivory walls and no discernible decor at all, so I'm hardly an arbiter of taste. Having said that--red lacquer cabinets!! I would love those.

I think color intimidates people in general, judging by my quilting experience. There were quilters who consistently worked with a palette of about four colors, over and over and over, and other's who just copied quilt shop samples color for color.

Those red cabinets sound beautiful. In my bedroom I always have a bright drama wall. Right now it’s pink. I always add color with accents mainly because if I change something expensive I am not going to do it twice. Also on average I only own a place for 6 years so need to appeal to the masses.

That was silly but fun.

The lacquer cabinets were epic and were featured in a local decor magazine. I had them in mind for my condo before I decided on traditional. At one point I was going to hit art deco theme pretty heavily. Lacquer fits well into art deco.

Anyway – the red lacquer cabinets and the lack of color at his place marks the end of an era. He still has fabulous art, I mean serious art.I just feel there’s so much blah and Meh around my neighborhood these days.

Well I am going on and on about this. Ha ha. So I’ve been able to distill in the last hour my concern and it is this:

Instead of giving my eyes something that hurts them, the Grey People give my eyes nothing to land on. My eyes my eyes! They need stimulation but stimulated with something good.

It is ALL. ABOUT. ME.
